Description
This lot contains nine 10-inch 78 RPM records by Harry James and his Orchestra, all on the Columbia label, plus an album to store them in.
The album - shown only in the first picture - is in used but functional condition, with typical cover wear, an index that's been filled in, and 12 record pockets with all the seams intact.
The records all showed up for the first picture, then split into three groups for the remaining pictures, in which they appear in the following order. Except as noted, they are all credited to "Harry James and his Orchestra." And they are all instrumental apart from those where the vocalist is added in parentheses. Also, some of them have stickers on the labels, and I can't remember which ones, so please look closely at the pictures.
Columbia 36672 - "Prince Charming" and "Velvet Moon."
Columbia 35587 - "All or Nothing at All" (labeled as "Frank Sinatra with Harry James and his Orchestra"); and "Flash." (Due to a slight warp at the edge, the latter side skips over the first few revolutions. The Frank Sinatra side plays without jumping. And even "The Flash" plays without jumping on my Garrard turntable, which has a heavier needle weight.)
Columbia 36827 - "11:60 P.M." (vocal by Kitty Kallen) and "Carnival."
Columbia 36599 - "But Not For Me" (vocal by Helen Forrest) and "The Mole."
Columbia 36683 - "Cherry" and "Jump Town."
Columbia 36677 - "I Heard You Cried Last Night" (vocal by Helen Forrest) and "James Session."
Columbia 36579 - "When You're a Long, Long Way from Home" (vocal by Jimmy Saunders) and "Strictly Instrumental." (This record has a curved pressure line that shows as a hairline crack on the Jimmy Saunders side, but is barely visible on the other. Both sides play without jumping, but this one will need careful treatment, and I don't think I can even guarantee that it will survive shipping.)
Columbia 36698 - "I'll Get By" (vocal by Dick Haymes) and "Flatbush Flanagan." (This one also looks warped at the edge, but both sides play through fine.)
Columbia 37156 - "Oh, But I Do" (vocal by Buddy Di Vito) and "Life Can Be Beautiful" (vocal by Marion Morgan).
Except as noted above, they all look to be in about VG+ condition (some of the sides may be closer to EX), still beautifully shiny, and with very little visible surface wear. I haven't played all of them all the way through, but I've played parts of each one, and what I can report is that, with the exception of the one noted above, I have detected no jumping or repeating on my Audio-Technica turntable, with mostly only typical light background noise, although there are a few passages that go click-click-click. Because of variations in tracking ability, filtering technology and needle weights, I can offer no guarantees as to how well they will play on your equipment.
Oh, and as a footnote, six of them were considered "hot" enough to be included in Brian Rust's iconic "Jazz Records" discography. And to be fair, the other three (36698, 36827 and 37156) apparently missed the discography's cut-off date of 1942.
