LP Novos Baianos – Acabou Chorare

Rocinante / Três Selos – 2025 Reissue

“It’s time for these sun-kissed people to show their worth,” announces “Brasil Pandeiro”, the opening track of Acabou Chorare (1972). Almost prophetically, what follows is widely regarded as one of the greatest albums in Brazilian music history—hailed by Rolling Stone as “the best Brazilian album of all time.”

Released in 1972, Acabou Chorare became a landmark record, firmly establishing Novos Baianos among the most important artists of the 1970s. At a time when Brazil was wrapped in shades of grey, the band burst forth with a vibrant tropical palette, blending the swing and malandragem of samba with the electric thunder of rock ’n’ roll. Living communally and guided by the influence of João Gilberto, the group traded urgency for lightness, creating an album that feels like a musical embrace—poetic, inventive and timeless.

From the delicate beauty of “Preta Pretinha” to the explosive energy of “Mistério do Planeta”, this LP is a masterclass in freedom and musical invention. The title itself—taken from a note written by Bebel Gilberto—reads like a prophecy against sorrow: Acabou Chorare (“No More Crying”).

This is the group’s second studio album, featuring Baby Consuelo (vocals, percussion), Paulinho Boca de Cantor (vocals, percussion), Pepeu Gomes (electric and acoustic guitars, craviola, arrangements), Moraes Moreira (vocals, acoustic guitar, arrangements), Dadi Carvalho (bass) and Jorginho Gomes (drums, cavaquinho, bongo). Influences range from João Gilberto and Jacob do Bandolim to Jimi Hendrix and The Rolling Stones, resulting in a sound that is uniquely Brazilian and universally influential.
