Description
This is a fine copy from a 1976 U.S. reissue of the groundbreaking double LP comp Nuggets, originally released by Elektra in 1972. Compiled and annotated by future Patti Smith guitarist Lenny Kaye, the record presents 27 examples of what can loosely be termed garage rock. Many of the groups attained at least a measure of popularity in their day: viz. the Electric Prunes, the Standells, the Strangeloves, the Blues Project, the Shadows of Knight, the Seeds, the Remains, the 13th Floor Elevators, the Count Five, the Leaves, the Amboy Dukes, the Blues Magoos, and the Nazz. There are some one-hit wonders (the Knickerbockers with their Beatles knockoff "Lies," the Castaways with "Liar, Liar," the Premiers with "Farmer John"), a couple of proto-progressive psych groups (the Third Rail, Sagittarius), and a couple of fun obscurities (Michael and the Messengers' "Just Like Romeo and Juliet," the Magic Mushrooms' "It's-A-Happening"). No '60s garage comp could hope to be comprehensive, and there are lots of omissions one could point to (the Music Machine comes immediately to mind), but this record mined this rich field first, and spawned dozens of similar series, some of which signaled their indebtedness with their names (e.g., Pebbles. Boulders). The gatefold jacket has light ring, corner, spine, seam, and edge wear, and light staining inside the gatefold -- EX(+). The discs are clean with some light scuffing, and play with some light surface noise -- EX(+). The record comes with two identical custom inner sleeves (EX-, M-).
I’m in the process of selling off a large personal collection amassed over two decades. All discs have been stored in plastic lined inner sleeves separate from their jackets. The jackets have been stored in plastic sleeves. I have play graded (spot checked) discs except where otherwise noted.
