Comentarios :

La Orchestra Dicupé grabó para el sello FANIA en la primera mitad de los años 70 dos long plays de gran calidad, muy representativos de la riqueza musical que existía en Nueva York en aquellos años. Producido por Larry Harlow, el primero de estos discos contó con los arreglos del entonces pianista de la orquesta Luis Esquilín, un músico con un estilo bastante personal e interesante y quien parece haber contribuido mucho a que el grupo consiguiera sus características y sonido particular.

El trabajo de Esquilín se puede apreciar particularmente en el solo de "El viejo Alonso", y aún más en la larga introducción (más de medio minuto) con la que abre "Aguántate", en la que toca solo con la rítmica. Pero este número queda particularmente especial por la manera que tenía Esquilín de estructurar los arreglos. Después del segmento expuesto por el piano viene la segunda parte de la intro, esta vez ejecutada por la orquesta completa pero que se parece mucho más a un mambo que a una introducción. Después de eso viene el vocal que se reduce a un estribillo de cuatro versos repetido varias veces por el coro, y una estrofa de solamente tres versos cantada por Javier Vélez como solista. En la segunda parte, en vez de los montunos hay solamente una larga improvisación de Esquilín.

Otro número de estructura bastante inhabitual es "Inferibous", que esta vez no tiene canción preliminar sino que se pasa al primer montuno inmediatamente después de la introducción instrumental. Siendo éste el segundo tema del disco, y ya que el primero viene cantado por Javier Vélez, lo que se obtiene es que la estupenda voz de Johnny Vásquez irrumpa en el disco directamente improvisando en el montuno. Luego viene un fragmento instrumental en ritmo de bomba, que sirve para traer un mambo muy largo en el que las trompetas de los Dicupé intervienen solamente por ratos, dejándoles el rol principal a los guajeos de Esquilín y que resulta siendo la culminación de la pieza, porque lo único que viene luego es un breve montuno conclusivo.

Johnny Vásquez vocaliza también el tema siguiente, un bolero de ambiente sombrío y melancólico con la intervención notable de Harlow en el vibráfono.

"Me voy para siempre" es otra pieza construida alrededor del mambo central dominado por los guajeos de Esquilín. Sin embargo, hay en el disco oportunidades para que se destaquen también los otros instrumentistas, empezando por los dos leaders trompetistas. Freddy Dicupé toca un emocionante solo con sordina en el bolero "Recordando", y Edil Dicupé hace en "Mundo perdido" a partir de 2:50 unas improvisaciones que permiten apreciar su linda sonoridad, nada estridente. Y qué placer escuchar a Johnny Vásquez saludar al productor a los 1:43 pero equivocándose en el nombre y pregonando:

Me lo dijo "Harry" Harlow

Me lo han dicho muchos más (que está perdido)

Hay también en el disco un solo por cada uno de los percusionistas: Ted Holiday en "Mazonga", Mario Librán en "Monín" y Johnny Almendra en "Breakdown". El álbum cuenta además con un coro prestigioso: nada menos que Ismael Miranda e Ismael Quintana, mientras que Adalberto Santiago puso las maracas (y probablemente intervino también como corista).

En resumidas cuentas, un disco sumamente logrado e injustamente olvidado por los historiadores de la salsa (en El libro de la salsa, C. M. Rondón ni menciona la Dicupé), que merece figurar en cualquier colección salsera seria.

L.V. - ¿Me puedes explicar por qué salió Esquilín de la orquesta? Él parece haber sido un elemento casi indispensable.

Mario Librán - Yo no te puedo decir exactamente... La última vez hubo una discusión, que hasta yo estuve envuelto. Y él quería coger el mando de la banda. Y había veces que a él había que esperarlo, porque cuando íbamos a tocar, lo llamábamos a la casa y él estaba todavía durmiendo. Entonces había que llamarlo y llamarlo. Además, tenía una novia, que luego se casó con ella, se llamaba Jenny. De hecho él hizo un número que se llamaba "Mambo Jenny", que nunca lo grabamos. Ella tocaba desafinado. …MI NOTA. EN ESTE 1ER LP ESTA EL NUMERO “RECORDANDO (JENNY)" DE ESQUILIN!

L.V. - ¿Era ella la bajista, cierto?

Edil Dicupé saliendo del estudio. Lo sigue el conguero Ted Holiday. Cruzado de brazos, Freddy Dicupé.

Mario Librán - Bueno, ella no era la bajista, sino que él la metió, ¿entiendes? Y por la influencia de él quería mantenerla en la banda, y hubieron muchos desacuerdos. Una vez estábamos practicando, y él quiso oponerse a todo y... tú sabes... Las cabezas se prendieron, hubo una discusión, y hasta yo tuve que intervenir porque Dicupé no era un muchacho de violencia. Y Esquilín, quiso imponerse y de ahí, de esa práctica, no regresó.

Empezó la búsqueda de otro pianista:

Mario Librán - Conseguimos a otros pianistas. Había uno que se llamaba Mark Dimond...

L.V. - ¿Markolino Dimond?

Mario Librán - Sí.

L.V. - ¿Markolino Dimond fue pianista de la orquesta Dicupé?

Mario Librán - Sí, tocó mucho con nosotros, solo que el problema también fue, que venía tarde. Con nosotros también tocaron Eddie Rivera, y otros. Fueron muchos los que vinieron, pero el que más tiempo se quedó fue Markolino. Luego vino Eddie Lebrón. Tuvimos diferentes músicos que iban y venían. También hemos tenido diferentes bajistas. Guillermo Edgehill fue bajista de nosotros. El que hizo el segundo álbum fue Quique Arroyo, quien estudiaba solfeo con Alberto Socarrás.

Near Mint (NM)

(Jacket) If the jacket is sealed there may be some minor corner damage from storage, it may or may not have the shrink-wrap, but the jacket itself will be in pristine condition. The corners will show very little wear (there will be no fraying) and will still be somewhat pointy to the touch. The cover will show no more than very minor dents or some single creases, no full bends that will cause multiple creases/damage. There will be no visible ring wear. No writing, rips or tears on the cover or seams. No bubbling, water/mold stains or peeling of the cover in any way. The inside of the gate-fold will be in the same condition. Cutout bin punches, price stickers, staples would start being listed at the NM category and would be noted accordingly as they affect the jacket itself.

(LP) You should not hear any surface noise (snaps,crackles, pops) when you play the record. There will not be any skips or repeats. The LP will retain that just opened appearance. There may be a surface blemish or two, but they will not have any affect on the sound. There will be no warping. There will be no major blemishes, light or deep scratches. The label will be free of writing and stains. There should be no spindle marks.

Excellent (VG++)

(Jacket) May or may not have shrink-wrap but the jacket itself will still be in beautiful condition. The corners will have minimal wear (no fraying).There may be minor dents and creases . Light scratches could be on the jacket, but nothing severe. Depending on age some discolor/yellowing may show, but will not be overbearing. Ring wear should be very minimal or non-existent...no dark, full, half, or quarter rings. No writing rips or tears. No bubbling, water stains or peeling of the cover . All inner gate-folds will be in similar condition.

(LP) You should not hear any sustained surface noise (snaps,crackles, pops) when you play the record. There will not be any skips or repeats. The LP will retain its most of it's glossiness and will appear like new. There may be a few surface blemishes, or a stray light scratch that may cause a moment of crackling, but nothing prolonged, and instances of this will be few. Often this will mostly occur only at the beginning of the groove on each side where the needle dropped. There will be no warping. There will be no deep scratches. There may be minor spotting or fog, but it will not affect the sound. The label will be free of writing and stains. Minimal spindle marks.

Very Good Plus (VG+)

(Jacket) May or may not have shrink wrap. There may be some easier to see imperfections, though nothing that will detract from the overall appearance in a major way. The corners will have some wear and there may be the beginnings of fraying but not full on. Some dents/creases or scratches may be noticeable, but nothing too pronounced. There could be noticeable discolor/yellowing .There may be some minor ring wear at the top and bottom; again you would have to look for it. No writing, rips or tears. Possibly some light bubbling. No water/mold stains or peeling of the cover in any way.

(LP) There may be some blemishes, maybe a scratch or two, but nothing too deep. It will not cause the record to skip or repeat. There will be no prolonged surface noise. There may be some minor warping but it will have no affect on the listening experience at all. Chances are there will be spindle marks. A VG+ record will show some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it.

Very Good (VG/VG-) TO BE SOLD AS IS!!!

(Jacket) May or may not have shrink wrap. There will be some easier to see imperfections, though nothing that will detract from the overall appearance in a major way. The corners will have some wear or fraying possibly causing seam splitting close to the seam. There may be split seams on any side. Usually not full side splits though. Sometimes they may be fixed by tape, sometimes not. Some dents/creases or scratches will be noticeable on the jacket, sometimes pronounced. Discolor and yellowing can be commonplace, as are smaller water/mold stains and some bubbling. There maybe a smaller tear on the cover, but nothing overly pronounced. Ring wear will certainly be pronounced. There may be some writing/defacing, but it will be minor.

(LP) There will be some blemishes, and some few scratches. They should not be at the feel-able stage though. There could be a skip or repeat, but only one or two at most. More often the deeper scratches will cause more frequent and prolonged surface noise. There may be some warping but it will not cause the needle to jump. Chances are there will be spindle marks. A VG/VG- record will obviously have been played and occasionally handled roughly by the original owner.
