Though Analog Africa is not the first label to put out a compilation of Orchestre Poly-Rhythmo material, they are arguably the most thorough. THE VODOUN EFFECT: FUNK & SAT FROM BENIN's OBSCURE LABELS is almost laser-like in its intense focus on a particular segment of the Orchestre's career, namely, the ensemble's early experiments with two vodoun-derived rhythms: sato and sakpata. Though lay listeners may have difficulty distinguishing these two equally frenetic styles from one another, the material collected here is undeniably mesmerizing.
