SHOW SYNOPSIS-
Little Shop of Horrors is a delectable sci-fi horror musical with an electrifying 1960s pop/rock score by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman.
Seymour Krelborn is a meek and dejected assistant at a floral shop who happens upon a strange plant, which he affectionately names “Audrey II” after his crush at the shop. Little does he know that this strange and unusual plant will develop a soulful R&B voice, a potty mouth, and an unquenchable thirst for HUMAN BLOOD.
As Audrey II grows bigger and meaner, the carnivorous plant promises limitless fame and fortune to Seymour, as long as he continues providing a fresh supply of blood. Just when it’s too late, Seymour discovers Audrey II’s extra-terrestrial origins and his true drive for world-domination.
ARTIST INFO:HOWARD ASHMAN & ALAN MENKEN BIOs-
3 May 1950, Baltimore, Maryland, USA, d. 14 March 1991, Los Angeles, California, USA. A lyricist, librettist, playwright and director. After studying at Boston University and Indiana University, where he gained a master’s degree in 1974, Ashman moved to New York and worked for publishers Grosset & Dunlap, while starting to write plays. One of his earliest works, Dreamstuff, a musical version of The Tempest, was staged at the WPA Theatre, New York, where Ashman served as artistic director from 1977-82. In 1979, the WPA presented a musical version of Kurt Vonnegut’s God Bless You, Mr Rosewater, written by Ashman in collaboration with composer Alan Menken (b. 22 July 1949, New Rochelle, New York, USA), which became a cult hit. In 1982, again at the WPA, they had even bigger success with Little Shop Of Horrors, an amusing musical about Audrey II, a man-eating plant. The show became the highest-grossing and third longest-running musical in off-Broadway history. It won the New York Drama Critics Award, Drama Desk Award, and Outer Critics Circle Award The London production won Evening Standard awards for Best Musical and Best Score.
As well as writing the book and lyrics, Ashman also directed the show. One of the songs from the 1986 film version, ‘Mean Green Mother From Outer Space’, was nominated for an Academy Award. Disenchanted with Broadway following his flop show Smile, with music by Marvin Hamlisch, Ashman moved to Hollywood, and the animated features of Walt Disney. One of Ashman’s own songs, with the ironic title, ‘Once Upon A Time In New York’, was sung by Huey Lewis inOliver & Company (1988), and the following year he was back with Menken for The Little Mermaid. Two of their songs for this film, ‘Kiss The Girl’ and ‘Under The Sea’, were nominated for Academy Awards. The latter won, and Menken received the Oscar for Best Score. Two years later, the duo did it again with their music and lyrics for Beauty And The Beast (1991) (one US theatre critic wrote: ‘Disney’s latest animated triumph boasts the most appealing musical comedy score in years, dammit’). Three songs from the film were nominated by the Academy, this time the title number emerged as the winner, along with the score. Menken received an unprecedented five BMI awards for this work on the film. In Ashman’s case his Academy Award was posthumous - he died of AIDS on 14 March 1991.
Menken signed a long-term contract with Disney, the first result of which was Newsies (1992; re-titled The News Boys in the UK), a turn-of-the-century live-action story, with lyrics by Jack Feldman. Before Ashman died he had been working with Menken on the songs for Aladdin, and one of them, ‘Friend Like Me’, was subsequently nominated for an Academy Award. Menken completed work on the film with UK lyricist Tim Rice, and their tender ballad, ‘A Whole New World’, won an Oscar, as did Menken’s score. ‘A Whole New World’ also won a Golden Globe award, and a version by Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle topped the US chart in 1993. Two years later, Menken worked with lyricist Stephen Schwartz on Disney’s new movie, Pocahontas. The team won Oscars for Original Music Or Comedy Score and Original Song (‘Colours Of The Wind’), and reunited for The Hunchback Of Notre Dame (1996). Menken’s other film work has included Rocky V (‘The Measure Of A Man’, 1990), Home Alone 2: Lost In New York (‘My Christmas Tree’, with Jack Feldman, 1992), Life With Mikey (aka Give Me A Break, 1993), Hercules (1997), and Little Mermaid II: The Return To The Sea (2000). Early in the 90s, Menken returned to the stage, collaborating with David Spencer for the science-fiction musical, Weird Romance (1992), at the WPA, and with Lynn Ahrens for a new $10 million musical version of the Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol (1994) at Madison Square Garden in New York. In April of that year, a spectacular stage production of Beauty And The Beast opened in New York, and three years later, Menken (with Tim Rice as librettist-lyricist) was back on Broadway with a limited, nine-performance run of the ‘concert event’, King David. Menken’s other honours have included BMI, Golden Globe, and Grammy awards.
