Here's an extremely rare ORIGINAL 1968 UK 1st PRESS MONO copy of this excellent late 60s US psych / sunshine pop album.

Orpheus was an underrated late 60s group out of central Massachusetts that had a very unique and well orchestrated soft-psych vibe that still sounds as fresh today as it did when originally first issued back in the late 60s. Although frequently associated with the "Bosstown Sound" and other bands that emerged from that scene like Ultimate Spinach and the Beacon Street Union, Orpheus performed at a higher level, producing consistently strong material throughout the span of their career. Much of the band's originality and success can be attributed to singer/songwriter Bruce Arnold (lead vocals, guitar) who either penned and, or arranged most of their well crafted output. Other original members included Jack McKennes (guitar, vocals), Eric Gulliksen (bass) and Harry Sandler (drums).
Orpheus' self-titled debut album, released at the end of 1967 (and not to be confused with their fourth LP, which was also self-titled, but was released in 1971 on Bell), is an excellent album mixing sunshine popsike with heavyweight ambition. The band were promoted as part of the late 60s "Bosstown sound" scene, which largely consisted of psychedelic or heavy rock bands, and although some of the members were ex-folkies, they were more in the crafted melodic sunshine pop vein at heart. Unlike many of the other bands of that scene they had a stronger "singer-songwriter soft rock attitude". The material is somewhat like sunshine pop, somewhat like mainstream harmony pop bands of the era such as The Association, and slightly tinged with flower-power lyricism. Sitars come in for part of "Never in My Life," a track which goes through various phases of varispeed at the end for a further psychedelic touch. "The Dream", one of the stand out tracks, has the sort of downbeat dreaminess typical of Dino Valente's cult 1968 album, with more ornate production.

EXCELLENT US PSYCH/Soft PSYCH ROCK......this was their 1st album from 1968......full of beautiful soft psych....all their albums seem to be in demand now and are getting very rare.....This ORIGINAL UK 1st PRESS MONO LP is hardly ever offered for sale!

MINT (M): The record / cd displays barely any signs of use, if any, with no marks or deterioration in sound quality. Extra items and cover are near perfect.

EXCELLENT (EX): Shows only minor signs of being played with very little lessening in sound quality. The Cover and extras will have some light wear and or creasing

VERY GOOD (VG): Has been played many times but has no major deterioration in sound quality, despite some noticeable surface marks and occasional light scratches. Cover and extras will have normal wear and tear but no major defects

GOOD (G): Has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and any extras may suffer from folding, scuffing, split spine, discoloration etc.

FAIR (F): The record is still just playable and has considerable surface noise and may even jump. Cover and contents will be torn stained and/or defaced.

POOR (P): The record will not play properly. Covers badly damaged or partly missing

+ or - : Indicates slightly better (+) or slightly lesser (-) condition than main grade
