Jazz Side 1 - Track 1. Moon Ray Side 1 - Track 2. Emily Side 2 - Track 1. If I Should Lose You Side 2 - Track 2. Love Comes Quietly Side 2 - Track 3. Shufflin'

Reissued here through Great Tracks, and cut in 1977 for the quietly legendary Three Blind Mice imprint, Yoshio Otomo's Moon Ray pairs his alto - sharp-edged, slightly tart, said to be in the Jackie McLean lineage - with Tsuyoshi Yamamoto's instinctive, rhythm-shifting piano. The title track plots a keenly felt blues domain against saxophonic range, Otomo pushing low before climbing out, Yamamoto nudging harmony from underneath; 'Emily' and 'If I Should Lose You' ensue in softer tones to contrast. Tamiko Kawabata and Arihide Kurata hold it tight but alert, fronting room to stretch sans drift. There's a single original in 'Ai Wa Shizuka Ni', sitting comfortably among standards, less a statement piece than a furtherance of the mood.
