ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful and quite rare 7 LP deluxe box set from Eurodisc / Melodiya (63951, German pressings, stereo/mono*, booklet included) entitled 'David Oistrach · Ein Vermächtnis' ('David Oistrakh · A Legacy) features a magnificent tribute to the great Russian violinist, collecting ten of his greatest concerto performances, including several lesser known recordings in superbly re-mastered sound that greatly improves upon the Melodiya originals, though in one instance Eurodisc/Ariola licenses a fine EMI title.

In addition to many of his more elusive studio recordings (e.g., the Bach and Mozart Concerti with Barshai, there are also two 'live' performances, including the world premiere of Shostakovich Violin Concerto No. 2 in C minor Op. 129.

The set comes with a handsome full-size gatefold booklet that contains several striking photos of Oistrakh, notes on the music, and tributes to the artist by the likes of Yehudi Menuhin, Enrico Mainardi, Joachim Kaiser, et al. (Note: all texts are only in German.)

Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto in D Major Op. 35 – with Gennady Rhozdestvensky and the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra (rec. 'live' on 27 September 1968)

Dvorak: Violin Concerto in A minor Op. 53 – with Kirill Kondrashin and the USSR State Symphony Orchestra (rec. 1949*)

Prokofiev: Violin Concerto No. 1 in D Major Op. 19 – with Kirill Kondrashin and the USSR Large Radio Symphony Orchestra (rec. 1953*)

Shostakovich: Violin Concerto No. 2 in C minor Op. 129 – with Kirill Kondrashin and the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra (rec. 'live' on 13 September 1967 – the world premiere performance)

A curious bonus comes in the form of Dvorak's Slavonic Dances Nos. 1 in A Major and 2 in C minor Op. 72, with Kurt Sanderling and the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra.

Eurodisc/Ariola did a wonderful job producing this set, with the 7 LPs housed in a striking canvas-like box of heavy construction. The pressings/transfers are simply superb.

CONDITION:
The condition of the box is near-MINT. There are really no flaws to speak of, perhaps some miniscule edgewear. However, the box is free of bends, splits, owner's markings or other defect and remains perfectly solid and highly presentation worthy – a lovely collector's copy.

The condition of the full-size gatefold booklet is similarly near-MINT. Again, there are no flaws to speak of, and the pages are bright an crisp and free of bends, tears, or marks.

The condition of the 7 LPs throughout is near-MINT and they play with defect – lovely collector's copies.

One of the finest Oistrakh 'omnibus'-type issues, and a must for the true Oistrakh collector.

A single 12" LP boxed for mailing weighs @ 485g. The rate for mailing any package (weighing from 350-1000g) outside of Europe is $21.95. Thus, you can buy 1 or 2 LPs, and the cost will be the same: $21.95.

Box sets can vary in weight depending on the heaviness of the construction, the size of the booklet, etc. Generally, it costs $24.95 to mail a 3LP box set.
