___________________________
The legendary Italian lyric soprano Magda Olivero had a career which defies categorisation, spanning over 50 years and over 150 parts on the operatic stage, as well as a recitalist well into her 90s. She retired in 1941 to have children and came back to the opera ten years later as Adriana Lecouvreur at the request of the composer Francesco Cilea.
She made her triumphant Metropolitan Opera debut as Tosca at the age of 65! As the critic Harold Schoenberg noted: "When she made her first entrance the audience began screaming and cheering, forcing the conductor Jan Behr to stop the music; arias were interrupted with cries of "bravo"; and at the end she was afforded a 20-minute ovation. It was history come to life as the soprano, despite her age, gave us a feminine, fiery, utterly convincing Tosca,”
In an interview to mark her 100th birthday she said: “I do not hold myself as a legend, only as a singer, who enjoyed her career with great love and always tried to give the best.” She was affectionately known as the last verista.
Her recordings are scarce and sought-after (including highlights from Adriana Lecouvreur with piano that she recorded at the age of 83). And this is one of the rarest ones, both in terms of edition and repertoire. It is a RAI broadcast concert from 1971, with Antonio Beltrami at the piano, in which she sings Italian songs, including the rarely recorded french songs of the Roman/Neapolitan school. It includes a short interview. Only a handful of these LPs were ever issued by a phono club conceived in her honour (the original Timaclub - not the mass label it later became). These recordings are absolutely beautiful and have never been issued on CD. Collector gold!

Condition Guide:
M: Mint; Factory sealed or unplayed (some older labels did not seal).
NM: Near Mint; Clean, Shiny, looks almost unplayed.
EX: Excellent; Only very minor wear.
VG: Very Good; A few marks, some surface noise - great for its age.
G: Good; A few more pronounced marks, some audible ticks, some surface noise, but overall serviceable.
W: Worn; Not for the purist! Marked, perhaps even will skip a couple of times. I only advertise such a record if it is extremely rare. A stop-gap copy while you look for a better one.
I award my ratings after a visual inspection, based on years of experience as a collector myself. Sometimes, for example in the case of a pressing flaw, I might listen to the record to determine whether it is audible or not.
Dust: Sometimes records recovered from estates, collections etc. are dusty. I do not clean records as a rule, unless I am about to play them. Dust is a collector's friend! It protects the grooves and preserves the vinyl in good condition.
Happy Bidding!
