Impossible-to-find still-sealed copy of this small label rarity with Kenneth Gaburo conducting the New Music Choral Ensemble in performances of a great selection of experimental vocal works spanning the proto-avant garde of Ives to the full-on postwar radical experimentation of Luigi Nono. Oliveros' composition allows singers to improvise an array of vocal noises; it was awarded the Gaudemus prize by Gyorgy Ligeti. The Johnston piece uses a microtonal system that divides the octave into 31 pitches. Messiaen's Cinq Rechants incorporates Indian rhythms and texts written by Messiaen in a language of his own invention (based slightly on Sanskrit).

artist info from album notes:
Nono was a postwar serialist composer (he was Arnold Schoenberg's son in law) and politically active socialist who was a student of Gian Francesco Malipiero, Hermann Scherchen, and Bruno Maderna, an associate of Luigi Dallapiccola, Luciano Berio, Pierre Boulez, Giacinto Scelsi, and Karlheinz Stockhausen, and an early electronic music pioneer at the Studio di Fonologia in Milan (where Henri Pousseur, Andre Boucourechliev, John Cage, and Bengt Hambraeus also worked). Known as the father of the French avant garde, Messiaen worked with Pierre Schaeffer and Pierre Henry, and was an essential teacher of Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Luciano Berio, Francois Bayle, and Francois Bernard Mache (among many other 20th century luminaries). He was influenced by Claude Debussy, Igor Stravinsky, Hindu music, Gamelan, and nature (birdsong), and his composing style was driven in part by his synesthesia (a brain condition that caused him to visually perceive sounds). Oliveros studied under Hugh Le Caine, Robert Erickson, and Thomas Nee, has worked with Terry Riley, Morton Subotnick, Luciano Berio, and Stuart Dempster, and is an experimental pioneer who combined electronics, minimalism, meditation, droning, just intonation tuning, and improvisation similar to La Monte Young. Webern studied serialist/12-tone compositional methods alongside Alban Berg under Arnold Schoenberg. Ives was a wealthy insurance businessman and an early modernist composer admired by Arnold Schoenberg; he would become influential to Henry Cowell, John Cage, Aron Copeland, Conlon Nancarrow, and Milton Babbitt. Johnston, a University of Illinois colleague of Herbert Brun, Lejaren Hiller, Gaburo, and Salvatore Martirano, was a pupil of Harry Partch, John Cage, and Darius Milhaud. Gaburo is a multimedia composer who studied with Bernard Rogers, Burrill Phillips, and Goffredo Petrassi and taught Donald Erb. Should also be of interest to fans of dada, Kurt Schwitters, Tristan Tzara, Joan La Barbara, Meredith Monk, Diamanda Galas, Pierre Henry, Charles Amirkhanian, text sound, Henri Chopin, Cathy Berberian, Laurie Anderson, Clark Coolidge, Brion Gysin, William S. Burroughs, Dieter Schnebel, Clytus Gottwald, and Mauricio Kagel.
