Orchestra Harlow – Hommy : A Latin Opera
Original Fania LP SLP-00425 (year 1972) – NM / NM
Larry Harlow's opera Hommy (inspired by the Who's Tommy), which was credited for Celia Cruz's comeback from retirement, was the first Latin musical performance in Carnegie Hall. (wikipedia.org)
Originally orchestrated and conducted at Carnegie Hall, with an all-star cast that included José “Cheo” Feliciano, Celia Cruz, Ismael “El Nene de la Salsa” Miranda, Héctor “La Voz” Lavoe, Adalberto Santiago, Justo Betancourt, Pete "El Conde" Rodríguez, Heny Alvarez, Hommy: A Latin Opera is a testimony to the conditions of Latinas and Latinos in the United States. The work demonstrates the hybrid identities of Latina and Latino communities. The project attempts to replicate and parallel Tommy: A Rock Opera by The Who.
