Orchestre Diarama Senegal 70s funk / mbalax LP Listen!

Orchestre Diarama de st Louis - Folklore Senegalais Sonafric SAF 50054 (1977) France
This is not the 1st time for an album title to be confusing, as if back in the days the word 'funk' was to be hidden between the grooves rather than on the sleeve. This group from St Louis played an early version of mbalax (the music that propelled Youssou N'dour to international fame) but on this one we clearly hear how mbalax is in fact rooted in many other styles. One tight JB-style funk inspired track that goes all out with sabar percussion and a rapping style vocal but there is no weak song on this album! The sound of these recordings is pretty garage / gritty overall.  Check out the snippets. Needless to say, like most Senegalese records this one is very hard to find, especially in such beautiful condition.
