Texas International Pop Festival POSTER - VARIOUS ARTISTS  

Original FREAKISHLY RARE withdrawn, advance first printing of the poster for the legendary 1969 Texas International Pop Festival.

Occurring 2 months after the Atlanta International Pop Festival (which shared many of the same performers, one of the same promoters + a near identical poster design) & a brief 2 weeks after Woodstock, this happening took place over Labor Day weekend at the Dallas International Motor Speedway in the small town of Lewisville, Texas, much to the chagrin of that burg's mayor. (Too many naked hippies skinny-dipping in the lake!) 24 major blues, rock, psychedelic & pop artists were featured, including CANNED HEAT, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD (whose name is not included on the poster, they played for free all 3 days), JANIS JOPLIN, B.B. KING, FREDDY KING, SANTANA, SLY & THE FAMILY STONE, SPIRIT, JOHNNY WINTER and... LED ZEPPELIN. ZEP's spring/summer '69 North American tour started in April, & this was the final U.S. show - their entire set has been circulated on numerous 'unofficial' releases thru the years - until they returned to the States in the fall. (Their debut performance in my hometown in November, '69 is local legend; they played 2 shows in the same night/venue, an early & late performance. I attended the early one and everything was quite alright, Page resplendent in hot pink trousers. During the break between the shows, John Bonham imbibed a wee bit too much alcohol & passed out behind his kit in mid-song early on in the set. A replacement drummer was found in one of the local opening acts & the show was completed w/ the stand-in. But I digress...) However, the initial scheduled TIPF line-up also included CROSBY, STILLS, NASH & YOUNG, fresh from their 'break-out' at Woodstock. For reasons apparently 'lost to time,' CSN&Y cancelled shortly before the festival's start. The first batch of advance posters had already been printed, so they were hastily recalled and soon replaced with the well known 2nd print. The differences between the 1st & 2nd are many and very striking; here's a few of them:

1.) artwork/lettering/design on the 1st print is simpler & more primitive

2.) background color on the 1st print is burnt orange-ish (as compared to yellow on the 2nd print)

3.) 17 acts are advertised on the 1st print, 20 on the 2nd print (the 1st showcases CSN&Y, but does not include JAMES COTTON BLUES BAND, JOHNNY WINTER, SANTANA & SWEETWATER, all featured on the 2nd print)

4.) 2 GLARING artist typos/mis-spellings on the 1st print: INCREIBLE STRING BAND, LED ZEPPLIN, both corrected on the 2nd print (proofreader on the 1st was probably 'toking on the job')

5.) FREDDIE KING on the 1st, FREDDY KING on the 2nd

6.) fine print info at the bottom of the poster detailing ticket info is more detailed on the 1st print

   These 'advance 1st print' posters were undoubtedly printed before the festival line-up was finalized, and it was certainly printed in an extremely small run, probably for distribution to Dallas-area record & music stores only, for a very brief period of time, I suspect. Whereas the 2nd print was actually given away at the festival itself, or so I've read, meaning many, many thousands were undoubtedly printed. When the 2nd print posters replaced the 1st, more than likely the majority of the 1st print were tossed into the trash; hence the INCREDIBLE scarcity of this nugget. It's unknown how many still exist, but odds are that the surviving 2nd print posters FAR, FAR outnumber the 1st print that may possibly be out there all these decades later. (From what I could find, the last copy of the advance print that was offered for sale - at least via the internet - was over 3 years ago.)

   This particular poster is a one owner item (well, technically now 2, counting me), a former artist/freak Houston-area native who attended the festival & had this in his possession since back at the time, some 45+ years. It's overall condition is STUNNING, considering the fragile nature of these thin paper posters. So, here is a rare opportunity to score this ULTRA SCARCE psychedelic/rock/counterculture/LED ZEP artifact. ZEPPELIN fans/collectors take note - they don't get much harder-to-find than this. Who knows if &/or when in the future another one of these will be offered?? (Poster will be rolled & shipped in a reinforced tube placed inside a cardboard box for added protection.) 

Poster = (Approx size - 25" x 18 1/4"); so SWEEEEET - lite & thin, 1" horizontal tear from left edge (between CHICAGO TRANSIT AUTHORITY and CROSBY, STILLS NASH & YOUNG - see pic); approx 3" lite/thin jagged vertical tear that has been taped together on the back of poster - see pic); small pin holes in the corners; approx 10 additional small pin/staple holes scattered (some very hard-to-see from the front, only noticeable from the back); 2 small splotches of black ink along left edge (see pic) & 1 small black ink dot near upper left corner; the tiniest bit of crinkle/wear in upper right corner - other 3 corners are still sharp; NO WRITING; NO CREASES - truly a FABULOUS-looking poster
