Original print of Jesus And mary Chain

Shown here is a vintage, silver gelatine print of a very early incarnation of the Jesus And Mary Chain (including Douglas Hart and Bobby Gillespie). It was taken in December 1984, close to their manager Alan McGee's then home in Tottenham, London, by the well known photographer Derek Ridgers.

It was commissioned by the British music magazine NME.

It would make an original and completely unique acquisition for any JAMC or Bobby Gillespie fan. This image has been published only once and has been unseen now for over two decades. Three other images from this session have ever been offered for sale on Ebay before, but this is the first time this precise image has been offered for sale. The recipient can therefore rest assured that they will currently be the only JAMC/Bobby Gillespie fan to own a copy.

Limited editions of Derek Ridgers' portraits usually sell for many hundreds of pounds (and occasionally a good deal more than that on websites such as Eyestorm.com). He has exhibited world-wide and extensively in this country including at the Barbican and The National Portrait Gallery, and has also had one man shows at the Institute of Contemporary Art and the Photographers Gallery.

All Derek Ridgers's photographs currently for sale on eBay were printed by himself, in his own darkroom on double weight, fibre based paper, and they were always archivally processed (air dried and cold flattened) to museum standards, regardless of end use.

This photograph is signed by the photographer in pencil on the back alongside various captions, a sticker and a couple of ink stamps.

The condition of the print is virtually perfect with no disclouration or significant marks of any kind. The illustration shown is a flat bed scan of the actual print being offered and also shows the precise edges of the print. The total print size is 30.5cm by 20.3cm, the image size is 26.8cm by 17.2cm.

Derek Ridgers' entire archive is being digitised and the need to finance and make room for this process has led to a requirement to sell a lot of his original prints.

All Derek Ridgers' black and white photographs currently for sale on eBay were printed by himself, in his own darkroom on double weight, fibre based paper, and they were always archivally processed (air dried and cold flattened) to museum standards, regardless of end use. The smaller of these prints (12x10 inches or less) were almost all printed at around the time of the original session. They were either duplicates of those supplied to the magazines or record companies that commissioned them, or they were simply edited out of the original selection that was supplied. I describe all these prints as "vintage". Most of the larger prints were made, but not necessarily at the time of the shoot, for my father's portfolio or for various exhibitions. Having said that, after '92/'93 my father seldom printed any smaller than 12x16 inches anyway - unless that size was specifically requested.

I can also say that once these prints are sold there's no guarantee that images from this session will ever become available again. So if you want one now, at a price decided by Ebayers, this is your chance.
