Description

Tom Waits fans have shown considerable interest our various prints of the great man. Hence we offer here three small prints of Tom Waits gurning. My father made these prints 12 or 13 years ago and always intended to mount them as a triptych. Like most things, he never got round to doing this and, rather than just have them kicking around loose in a box forever, we have decided to offer them here.

These three prints are almost unique. There is another set, with the negatives flipped so that he is looking the other way. Don't ask me why this was. These are the only two copies of the three prints in exsistence and my father has no intention of printing them again. Later on, we will be listing a large print of one of these images and that is the only one time any one of them has been printed in a larger size.

We believe this would make an interesting and unique Christmas present for any Tom Waits fan. Images from this session have seldom been published and, apart from those offered for sale on Ebay over the last few months, they have never been offered for sale before.

Limited editions of Derek Ridgers portraits usually sell for many hundreds of pounds (see the Britart.com website). He has exhibited world-wide and extensively in this country including at the Barbican and The National Portrait Gallery, and has also had one man shows at the Institute of Contemporary Art and the Photographers Gallery.

Each photograph is signed in pencil by the photographer on the back, alongside one of his own stamps.

The condition of three prints is perfect with no marks, creases or discolouration. They are NOT currently mounted as shown but are offered loose. The illustration shown is a flat bed scan of the images being offered and they are each approximately 17.2 cm by 12 cm in size. The prints have been made on the long discontinued Kentmere matt photographic paper.

Derek Ridgers' entire archive is being digitised and the need to finance and make room for this process has led to a requirement to sell a lot of his original prints.

Almost all Derek Ridgers' black and white photographs currently for sale on eBay were printed by himself, in his own darkroom on double weight, fibre based paper, and they were always archivally processed (air dried and cold flattened) to museum standards, regardless of end use. The smaller of these prints (12x10 inches or less) were almost all printed at around the time of the original session. They were either duplicates of those supplied to the magazines or record companies that commissioned them, or they were simply edited out of the original selection that was supplied. I describe all these prints as "vintage". Most of the larger prints were made, but not necessarily at the time of the shoot, for my father's portfolio or for various exhibitions. Having said that, after '92/'93 my father seldom printed any smaller than 12x16 inches anyway - unless that size was specifically requested.

From January 2007 my father now plans to start selling a small number of signed, limited edition prints from his website. This print is very unlikely to be one of them. And none of them will be vintage prints, lith prints or one-off prints, printed by the photographer himself. So if you want this print now, at a price decided by Ebayers, this is your chance.

If you look at my feedback you'll see that we now have several repeat purchasers, a fact that may best speak for itself.
