I Can’t Take It Like You Can
For those who know P. J. Proby in the America, it's likely because of his record "Niki Hoeky" from 1967. In England he did much better, scoring four top ten hits in '64 and '65. Of course, it didn't hurt matters much to split out the inseam of P.J.'s trousers in a live performance either. And lets not forget that pony-tail haircut and Tom-Jones-Meets-Sonny-Bono attire too!
In the summer of 1963 Proby got signed by Liberty Records, and would start out on a string of platters that would very nearly all be missed by US buyers. This was his very first platter for Liberty, and it’s clear from the review in Billboard, that they didn’t see him as a rock ‘n’ roll act, but rather as a country artist. With that Floyd Cramer style piano on the track, it’s pretty clear they were casting hims as something other than R&R.
At the time Billboard reviewed it with “A strong new country artist here and he bows with two effective sides. First up is (I CAN’T TAKE IT LIKE YOU CAN) a soulful weeper and the soft, sad sound could score. Flip (SO DO I) is in the Johnny Cash ‘I Walk The Line’ groove, and it could also move out. Watch these.”
