Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with with only light, fine and faint spindle marks. The best example of this rare swirl record I have seen, it appears only very lightly played.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 135 grams. A very good solid weight.

Brief Info: The first of two Patto albums on this most collectable ‘progressive’ label – both are scarce and somewhat elusive – the second is very rare indeed. Regarded as a classic by fans but both the Vertigo albums sold poorly and they were duly dropped by the label. Patto play a jazz-tinged rock but used no brass or winds, simply guitars and rhythm. A typically wonderful Spiral cover, this gatefold format is very colourful and has deeply textured surfaces - although most of the acts on his label has little commercial potential, no expense was spared in the design of the covers and this is another gem. Again, like many of these, it is very prone to wear but this one remains attractive with most on the bottom storage edges. The record looks very little played and only has very fine and faint whispy surface traces – even lighter than hairlines, as seen under bright angled light. The 1970 date-coded swirl inner is also included, and overall, a very nice example of this highly collectable Vertigo classic.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or close to. An unlaminated gatefold format with heavily textured surfaces on all faces, including the inside spread. Printed and made in England by Howards and includes the spiral inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Bright and spectacular artwork and here looking very impressive indeed, lacking the usual price or sale sticker issues so many Vertigo covers suffer from. With such heavy and quite deep texturing, the lack of rubbing to the raised surfaces is quite unusual, this has only fairly mild traces of grubbiness from handling on the edges and little else. Yellow is the most revealing colour possible, that is why is the most used background colour used for visibility in industry. Any traces of rubbing are only (just) seen on the bottom edge and corner tips, but the lack of creasing or significant marks are major pluses. This classic spiral front cover will prove hard to find much better.

Cover Back: The back is similar with just a little more edge and corner rubbing, also a fraction more darkening on the handling areas. But I am still talking very light on these ultimately revealing surfaces. This has the VO price code inside a box on the bottom right corner area, this is totally unrubbed. There is no ring wear which is always a great bonus, also hardly any creasing at all.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The odd tiny edge rub apart, the inside looks fantastic and little short of as made. Both faces are near immaculate, clean, fresh and spectacular looking, this spread will prove near impossible to find better.

Top Edges: Any rubbing very light and patchy with very little on the front at all, both remain very straight as well.

Bottom Edges: Light, but mostly moderate patchy rubbing. This so difficult to avoid on these most vulnerable storage edges.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front has a real tucked and folded edge which straight and unworn. The back open storage edge is neat with a fraction uneven trim, meaning the inside is crisp and practically unworn being protected by the overlapping back (I am talking no more than a couple of millimetres). The actual outside back edge is a little thickened as seen viewed end-on and guaranteed untrimmed, but still neat.

Spine and Text: The spine has only a little light patchy rubbing mostly near the ends and on the top centre fold. It is solid, straight, uncompressed and folded square, so the edges meet up perfectly together and parallel – this always makes a cover look better of course. All text has survived unscathed and is fully present, solid and very easy to read with deep colour retained as is most of the runabout graphic. Both folds retain most of their ink with just the odd rub or two as stated already.

Corners: Light, but mostly nearer moderate tip rubs with fine to very fine shape largely retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this highly uncompromising and wear-prone early 1970’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better – not that easy finding this at all these days, as like most Vertigos, they are in high demand. With most of any wear on the bottom edges and corner tips, this is still an attractive item should please many collectors – it could indeed prove a significant upgrade for many as this is notoriously more often seen in bad shape.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: and one of the most famous standard inner sleeves used in a number of different albums. An polylined Spiral inner that is correctly date-coded 1070 (October 1970), the album issued in November 1970. Some mild ageing and general moderate darkening, the seams which remain unsplit with no repairs. Both window circles crisp and undamaged with a clear, if a little crinkled lining. Two small round stickers were on the back, both dried out and fell off. A very solid, fully intact inner that politely gives clues to it’s 43+ years-of-age.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: and quite possibly undergraded as such. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with fine shine, intense black and solidly pressed. Under bright angled light, ultra fine, very whispy surface traces are seen, almost certainly from dry cloth cleaning. Totally harmless of course, this record has NO penetrating marks or scratches at all, the surface traces even finer than hairlines. A visually attractive record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare Spiral record plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to really fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a solid dynamic range but with a slightly muted production that benefits from volume. Any surface sounds are minimal and few available examples will better this significant I feel sure. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this elusive and prized Spiral record. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended – not quite for the Vertigo connoisseur, but most fans and collectors of this cult label will be pleased.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
