Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with hardly a spindle mark to be seen.

Cat Number: EMC 3175.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 109 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: Very rare: the cover only gives some clues to who Percy Thrillington was and this sold very few copies and totally flopped. With no credits to Paul McCartney on the cover, only a picture drawing of a figure resembling the great man and the word ‘Ram’ on the sheet music on the front stand, this has no chance whatsoever in selling and it simply got lost making it one of the rarest and most unknown Paul McCartney and Beatles related albums ever made.

Brief Info: Originally recorded in 1971, this was the orchestral version of McCartney’s album ‘Ram’ and it was to be issued soon after. But due the formation of Wings with his wife Linda, this project was shelved and not issued until 1977 to absolutely no publicity or credits to McCartney whatsoever. Hence it flopped and disappeared quickly and many fans of the man did not even know of its existence let alone it was a McCartney work. He produced the album under the pseudonym Percy ‘Thrills’ Thrillington and there is a picture on the back cover that looks like him but no-one noticed. This is one of the great ‘lost’ works within the Beatles-related catalogue and has become incredibly difficult to find now the secret’s out. McCartney and Beatles completists often search in vain for this album and it rarely ever surfaces to offer. This copy is in very fine condition and here is a rare chance to get your hands on a copy - it was one of the last, or indeed the very last album to adorn the red Zonophone label.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High.

Cover Grade and Format: EX a single unlaminated format that was printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse. This copy includes the inner.

Cover Front: Clean with very little rubbing, traces near the top and bottom edge on the inside flipback construction – but look hard. A few light surface marks that only really show with angled viewing but hardly any traces of creasing. Given the blackness of the cover and lack of protection, this front has survived over 30 years in very find condition.

Cover Back: The back is practically the same, better if anything, the lack of ringwear is a massive bonus on such a vulnerable cover.

Top Edge: Very slight rub traces only.

Bottom Edge: Pretty much the same.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with no wear or feathering. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression and barely any wear. All text is perfect and unworn.

Corners: Tiny tip rubs but little else and all retain very fine shape and definition.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this very fragile 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This attractive and very rare item should please many collectors.

The Inner: EX++ a card unlined inner with a wide recessed top. This has little to fault at all with any surface dulling only very light and minimal. All edges unsplit and barely any creases of any significance.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX+, A very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and fairly solidly pressed. Just a very few very light surface marks or hairlines that have no effect on sound at all. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This very rare record record plays up to and most all exceeds its high visual grading with little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is astonishingly high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. This is the ‘Ram’ album done with small ensemble and an audiophile quality production that sounds absolutely marvellous. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no major pops or clicks were noted. This type of music will have a few quiet passages but not that many. Traces of surface sound was noted a couple of times but so light it was almost insignificant and few copies will outperform this significantly I feel sure. All the sound is crystal clear and fully focused and pin-sharp, clearly hardly played, this is a rare and wonderful opportunity for the specialist collector and completist. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this unusual and somewhat ‘lost’ record. One of the best kept secrets for some time hence the genuine rarity, this copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
