PAUL SIMON

Paul Simon is one of the most successful and respected songwriters of the rock era. Being half of the legendary pop duo Simon & Garfunkel would be enough for most people, but Simon reaped just as much acclaim as a solo artist. In the 1970s, he was at the vanguard of the singer/songwriter movement, marrying smart, reflective lyrics with sophisticated pop music. His 1975 solo album Still Crazy After All These Years topped the charts, won the Grammy for Album of the Year, and included the number one hit "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover." In the '80s, he was one of the first pop artists to successfully combine world music into his sound, resulting in the South African flavor of the landmark Graceland, another Album of the Year Grammy winner.

Like the identically titled Simon & Garfunkel boxed set released at the same time, Paul Simon's Collected Works was what it claimed to be: A five-LP set reissue containing The Paul Simon Song Book (in its first and only U.S. release), Paul Simon, There Goes Rhymin' Simon, Paul Simon in Concert: Live Rhymin', and Still Crazy After All These Years. The Song Book, containing solo Simon versions of songs that turned up on the first three Simon & Garfunkel albums, remained an interesting curiosity and Live Rhymin' remained an entertaining tour souvenir, but the heart of the matter was Simon's three 1970s studio albums, which constituted some of the most accomplished pop music of the period. By the time this set was released, Simon had decamped CBS/Columbia for Warner Bros....(AllMusic)
