Posting to Russia: Yes, I do post to Russia. But delivery can take up to 4 to 6 weeks from the UK. So please be patient. I will submit a tracking number to the winning bidder, and when the packet arrives there it can be followed online using the Russian post website.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only two or three light spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Weight of this Record: 133 grams. Actually an impressive weight for this album that is often very thin and light, the year of issue clearly the reason.

Brief Info: The fifth and last album Pentangle made for Transatlantic before a brief one-album stop for Reprise. Another fine set from one of folk music’s greatest exponents that include the brilliant pure voice of Jacqui McShee. Arguably the least-seen of their initial six albums. This an ultimate first pressing with the prized 1 G mother/stamper codes, and appearing hardly played. One fine hairline does nothing and any audio blemishes on this predominately acoustic album are minimal, very few and light. Unusually, it does include some electric guitar. So a very fine first issue that could prove difficult to find much better.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: but arguably looking better still. A fully laminated gatefold format. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press and including the customised song title printed inner sleeve that was also printed by the same manufacturer.

Lamination – Front & Back: Both sides retain excellent shine, freshness and clarity with minimal hint of dulling and no lifting. A mild crease on the front near the left bottom corner area and a thumb crease on the back central area opening edge. Most of any others are fine, quite few and light. A few light press marks on the front seen under light, but viewed full-on both sides look very impressive with very deep colour to the graphics retained.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Again very fresh and shiny, just a light surface crease near the bottom to the right of the fold hinge. This retains fine spring and even creaks on opening.

Top Edges: Both perfect, straight, flush and smooth.

Bottom Edges: Both folds as above, just the card end panel has thickened on the front simply from storage.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front edge is very sharp and neat. The entrance edges on the back are mostly sharp with any thickening and light as seen viewed end-on. All are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with a little mild compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. This is one with a very raised inside fold hinge, meaning the spine will usually form a natural recess on opening. So the text will sink into this recess and has to some degree, but all is unworn and strong as seen. More unusually, the laminate retains fully intact and smooth without the usual flaking and peeling.

Corners: Any tip rubs tiny and light, excellent shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this lesser-seen Pentangle cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This still very attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR MINT: and by a distance the very best one I have ever seen. This original MacNeill printed text inner is simply superb. Clean, fresh, barely creased or aged at all. A solid unlined inner with all edges unsplit with no repairs, this part on its own could prove a crucial upgrade for some, an integral part of this album that is more often torn and badly creased or aged.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and a very solidly pressed ultimate first pressing. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks mostly very light, fine and wispy with just the odd hairline or two that show a little more. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers bar a hairline. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This lovely folk-rock album plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed – the odd millisecond pressing sound and a couple or three gentle ticks apart, this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. With some typical fine and compact grooves denoting some very quiet passages, the odd blemishs is nigh-on impossible to avoid totally, that simply being realistic. Often a label with variable pressing quality, but this much heavier than average copy is one of the finest I have heard overall. Few available copies will outperform this 1G/1G pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally carefully handled and stored in a non-smoking environment. Little of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful, quite delicate record. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
