PETE TOWNSHEND of the WHO saw PEOPLE! in concert in 1968 and got the idea of the rock opera TOMMY from their long track "The Epic"
This California garage/psych band, known as "PEOPLE!", scored a timeless groover with the nugget "I Love You" ... the rest of the album, their first, rounds out with similar organ/guitar structures with self penned tunes that make it the best of the three albums they recorded...
PEOPLE! formed in San Jose, California in 1965. They performed garage rock music with sometimes psych edges and released three albums of original material. Their greatest success came with a hit single they released called "I LOVE YOU", a song written and recorded by The Zombies that never charted in the United States. The PEOPLE! version of I LOVE YOU , on the other hand, rocketed up to number one in Japan (twice), Israel, Australia, Italy, South Africa, Philippines and peaked at #7 on the US Billboard Top Twenty List in June 1968.
PEOPLE! suprisingly incoroprated two drummers in their live show long before The Grateful Dead , The Allman Brother's Band, etc. They were the first to present a dramatic Rock Opera onstage with the creation of excellent track 'THE EPIC' which takes up all of side two and sounds as if several songs were spliced together to form the one long composition. Well, it is much better than the Beatles ~ Revolution #9..
PEOPLE! also featured more than one lead singer long before groups who came along later like "Spirit" etc.
