Things may come and things may go ... although a thing of beauty such as this is a joy forever, in my book. Here is a first pressing of 'things may come and things may go but ... THE ART SCHOOL DANCE GOES ON FOR EVER' by Pete Brown & Piblokto! from 1970. On original non-EMI Harvest (SHVL 768) with earliest 1G/1G matrices. This album can be found at the very top of the progressive/psych heap with (for once) poetic content to match the melodies. Just listen to Golden Country Kingdom (Pete's eulogy to autumn). This IS a thing of beauty and a joy forever.
The laminated gatefold sleeve is in a strong VG+ condition* with hardly any creasing, good strong true straight edges and corners, unworn top and bottom edges and a strong opening. There are no rips or tears and no unwanted writing. The unusually wide spine is straight and strong although some of the colour (mainly the reddish sections) have faded due to exposure to light during storage. This fading is confined only to the spine and does not extend onto either the front or rear of the cover. There is also a little wear at the top and bottom corners of the spine.
The inside of the gatefold with its black and white cartoon format and monochrome photography is excellent, with the large expanse of white background unusually clean.
This really has to be one of the most interesting gatefolds of the era.
The lovely fat slab of original heavyweight Harvest vinyl is a particularly early pressing with 1G/1G matrices. It too is a strong VG+ with no marks visible under normal lighting conditions and just a few very light marks showing when the vinyl is held up to unforgiving halogen lighting. As with much sixties and seventies vinyl it does not lie perfectly fat on the turntable but this in no way affects the playing quality.
The lovely original non-EMI Harvest labels are of similar quality. I detect one spindle mark on Side One and very little spindle activity on Side Two, and no wear whatsoever is apparent around either spindle hole. This fine disc has clearly enjoyed very little use.
The package comes with its original 'flipback' polylined Harvest advertising inner bag which is in VG+ conditon with no tears or writing but just a little browning here and there.
As you can no doubt see by the pictures I have provided this is a delightful example of a rare and classic slice of top quality progressive/psych.
