Brief Info: When this first solo album was issued, few would have even heard of Peter Bardens. He went on to became a full-time member of the prog-rock band Camel with fine success. He had previously been a session player and worked with the likes of Peter Green (and others) who appears on this album but is uncredited on the cover. The very eye-catching and colourful sleeve did little for sales either. A quite varied album in terms of material with six long songs and some superb guitar-work is included from Andy Gee. Certainly more than a curio for Camel fans and collectors, I actually rate much of this rare set highly. This a superb example, barely played and very well pressed. Hardly a typical Transatlantic album that specialised more in folk than rock, it remains quite an unusual, pre-Camel one-off.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single fully laminated format. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press. Includes the original plain unlined inner so favoured by Transatlantic.

Cover Cosmetic Improvements: None Apparent.

Lamination – Front & Back: Pretty much the only issue on this cover is lifting on the spine edge – that I never consider wear as many covers had this from new. All still solid with no peeling and minimal cracking. Fully laminated thin card covers rarely will avoid it, and laminate naturally tightens with age as well. The laminate retains superb shine, freshness and clarity and that spectacular artwork on the front especially looks fantastic. Very few creases and minimal traces of any dulling, even viewed under angled light. There are natural exposed end-strips on the laminate ends, all barely worn and clean. This hugely impressive vintage cover will never prove easy to find better.

Top Edge: Thin but very straight indeed with a super-smooth laminated surface that is unworn.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly very sharp with barely any wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way. Again viewing end-on reveals just how thin the card is, making this cover beautifully preserved overall.

Spine and Text: Solid, but again very thin, but straight with minimal compression. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled laminate. Three or four very fine hairline creases, the ends are deeply pinched in manufacture.

Corners: The corners are all in superb condition with no dinks and barely any tip rubbing at all. Highly commendable for a fairly flimsy cover, all retain excellent or even better shape.

Cover Summary: Even with almost mandatory spine edge lifting that will rarely be avoided, this really yis one to hold and admire. A very strong all-round example of this very fragile early 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): arguably better, this has nothing to fault bar mild, natural darkening of the seam adhesive. A unlined open plain white inner with two immaculate undamaged window circles, barely a crease to be seen and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++), practically MINT(–): a superb visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine, freshness and very solidly pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence with any surface trace marks tiny, few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Two hugely impresisve playing surfaces with labels to match, they hardly get much better and visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality and rare Transatlantic original plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will match or outperform this very early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive record which is arguably still an under-appreciated gem. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and merits my highest possible recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
