Weight of the vinyl: 135 gr., far heavier than any later re-issue! Gatefold sleeve: Lightly textured, only the real first press will have this important feature. All later issues were smooth. The LARGE mad Hatter on the labels. All later re-issues have the small Mad Hatter. First press A-1U and B-1U matrices. This also has the original inner lyric sleeve in EX condition. A very rare VDGG/Peter Hammill album in splendid condition. There are not many around in this condition these days.
Brief Artist & Album Info:
The cover was designed by Bettina Hohls, ex-member of the psychedelic German rock band Ash Ra Tempel. Bettina Hohls had also contributed to the cover of Hammill's earlier album Chameleon in the Shadow of the Night.
The lengthy "A Louse is not a Home" is a full blown prog rock epic featuring melodramatic lyrics about (among other things) the nature of identity. It was originally written for Van der Graaf Generator's album following Pawn Hearts, an album that because of the band's split never came to be.[3] It features all of Van der Graaf Generator's ex-members. "The Lie (Bernini's Saint Theresa)" partly alludes to the Ecstasy of St Theresa by Bernini. "Red Shift" features Spirit guitarist Randy California on lead guitar. Hammill has often performed the song "Modern" in concert.
I have played this in FULL> The replay is ASTOUNDING!!! There are not any jumps or skips. The heavy vinyl with high groovewalls provides a great audio experience with channelling not equalled by the later re-issues. I played this on my Technics turntable with a Linn cartridge and through my very revealing B&W three way speakers!!! A beautiful CLASSIC with supreme songcraft, a joy to listen to!!!! The labels are testament to the overall supreme condition of the album, not a mark and no spindle traces. Possibly unplayed but two plays as a maximum. This album is an ultimate keeper upgrade!!
Vinyl: NM. Both surfaces retain their original deep, glossy sheen. There are not any hairlines on each side. There are no marks.
Outstanding audio delivery in all respects with a crystal clear, deep, rich, warm and detailed sound and on playback at a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my LPs prior to listing and it's always an immense pleasure to return to this one). The whole LP sounds absolutely supreme and plays to a high standard with superb clarity, no groove-wear and no distortion. A beautiful must have album for any VDGG collector. Of course, NO skips, NO jumps, NO clicks.
Gatefold Sleeve: EX+. A splendid example of this very hard to find LP. This has the ultra light textured surface, barely visible but definitely feelable with your finger tips. A great well looked after copy without any issues. Near perfect edges with only the lightest of wear to the bottom edge and an extremely crisp opening. One small price sticker (£2.28) to the front right which might be removable with due care. The spine is fully legible. It will be a tough task to still improve on this copy. Of course NO creases, NO tears, NO writing.
