Description

original Jamaican reggae single produced by Lee Perry: The Wailers "Downperesser" / The Righteous Upsetters "Downpresser Version" (Upsetter Records)

(PETER TOSH &)
THE WAILERS
DOWNPRESSER
THE RIGHTEOUS UPSETTERS
DOWNPRESSER VERSION
original 1971 Jamaican pressing

A quintessential Lee 'Scratch' Perry Wailers single on Upsetter with an upsolute Righteous Upsetters dynamite dub on the flipside. As described in the recommended recent book BOB MARLEY & THE WAILERS: THE DEFINITIVE DISCOGRAPHY by Roger Steffens and Leroy Jodie Pierson, this original version of "Downpresser" features Peter Tosh on vocal, Bob Marley & Bunny Wailer on harmony vocals, Carlton Barrett on drums, Aston "Family Man" Barrett on bass, Alva "Reggie" Lewis on guitar, Glen Adams on keyboards, Gladdy Anderson on piano, Uziah "Sticky" Thompson playing percussion. Errol Thompsion engineered the whole affair at Randy's Studio 17 on a four track with Lee Perry producing. Almighty sounds. The composer credit on "Downpresser" reads P. Touch. It is Peter's third recording of the traditional "Sinner Man' which he first cut at Studio One in 1968. 'Tell me Downpressor Man, where you gonna run to?'

As David Katz relates in his brilliant book PEOPLE FUNNY BOY The Genius Of Lee 'Scratch' Perry: "Perry recorded a couple of strong Peter Tosh compositions in this time, the first of which was 'Downpresser', a version of the spiritual 'Sinner Man'. The Wailers had recorded an earlier version of the latter at Studio One, but as with 'Put It On', this version for Perry had greater strength, the pace of the rhythm allowing for a stronger expression of the meaning of each word, augmented nicely by interjections of harmony from Bunny." from the Chapter THE UPSETTER & THE WAILERS - SOUL REBELS.

The ORIGINAL Upsetter Records 1971 Jamaican vinyl is in VG+ condition with no skips, no warp. No handwriting anywhere. 'PRODUCED AND DIRECTED BY: LEE PERRY.' Made in Jamaica.
