Their first album - Mestre - is a statement. Though the lyrics are in Portuguese, I can assure you that they reflect thoughts and corrosive criticism to the system. It is obviously a big surprise for me that this album was ever allowed in the market (rumors say that there was an influential protector...).
The music is a combination of later 60's proto-prog and psychedelia with some slight Portuguese folk and a lot of experimentation.
The music is mainly based on the keyboard layers and guitar soloing, but also tends to give a major role to the vocals.
I have no doubt that bands such as Procol Harum, early Pink Floyd, The Nice or Beatles were part of Petrus Castrus background influences, but also ELP seems to have been an important model for the keyboards work in Mestre.
Amongst the bands that were walking the same paths as Petrus Castrus were Filarmónica Fraude and Banda do Casaco (more folksy) and José Cid's Quarteto 1111 (more Beatlesque).
Apart from belonging to the origins of the Progressive scene in Portugal, this band was sipping attitude from the movement known as "Música de Intervenção" (Interventionist Music), a political driven group of musicians with a revolutionary philosophy.

Mestre is another historic register in Portuguese Progressive History. It must be listened to with the knowledge of all the mentioned factors or it will not be quite understood. It is unpolished and even a bit raw. But it was very important for the scene when it came out, and still has it's place well secure in the hearts of Portuguese progheads.
They would later develop their symphonic side in their second album (Ascenção e Queda from 1978) which is a much more worked out and muscled release, but the "innocence" and "idealistic" concept of this first are their finest charms.
By the way, this album only exists in vinyl.

The second album, Ascenção E Queda (Arise and Fall) was released in 1978.It is a concept album about the history of a new politician and his good leadership of a obscure nation and its ending (in the end he become a dictator). It is a complex album full of piano, narration and effects
