Phil Jones and the Unknown Blues :

Formed: 1965

Style: Blues, pop

Original line-up: Phil Jones (vocals), Chris Brown (guitar), Andrew Blundell (keyboards), Bill Hodgkisson (bass), Dave Rowland (drums)

Singer Phil Jones formed The Unknown Blues as a schoolboy band. In early 1967, the band signed to Festival Records and issued 'If I Had a Ticket'/'300 Pounds of Joy' (March) which became a Top 20 hit in Sydney. 'If I Had a Ticket' was a traditional song which the band rearranged and wrote new lyrics. Ed Kuepper (The Saints) revived the song in 1994 when he issued it as a CD single.

The Unknown Blues earned a reputation as a fine blues band. They followed up 'If I Had a Ticket' with another traditional song, 'Pick a Bale of Cotton'/'Sylvie' (August) and 'Lovin' You, is Better, Baby'/'Brave New World (of Fairy Tales)' (November). By that stage, new members had arrived, including Mal Capewell (sax), King Fisher (trumpet; ex-Id), Vaughan Brus (keyboards) and lan Sullivan. The band broke up and Jones issued two solo singles on Festival, 'I Really Love You'/'This Fime' (September 1968) and 'I Feel Like a King'/ Blue Laroo' (December 1968).

In 1969, Phil Jones, Chris Brown and Mal Capewell headed to the UK, where they became nvolved in the burgeoning underground/progressive rock community based around London's Ladbroke Grove/Notting Hill Gate area. Jones joined the Eastern tinged jazz-rock band Quintessence, alongside another Australian, Ron Rothfield, who had assumed the name Raja Ram (flute, violin, percussion). Jones took the name Shiva Shankar Jones. Shiva appeared on four Quintessence albums for the Island label, In Blissful Company, Quintessence, Dive Deep and Self.

Shiva left the band in late 1971 to form the like-minded Kala with Quintessence guitarist Maha Dev (Dave Coding). Kala issued one self-titled album on the Bradleys label (1972). Expatriates Dave Bentley (ex-Python Lee Jackson), Chris Brown and Col Loughnan joined Kala following the album's release, but soon after Brown and Loughnan returned to Australia to join Ayers Rock. Shiva travelled to the USA before returning to Australia in 1975. He formed a succession of bands, including Phil Jones Band and Cisco Kids. He effectively retired from performing. In the early 1990s, his sons Amarnath and Krishna formed rock-funk band Juice.

Meanwhile, Mal Capewell worked in the UK where he cut a dashing figure as a member of Manfred Mann's Chapter III, Dada (which included singers Robert Palmer and Elkie Brooks; one album Dada on Atlantic, 1970) and Graham Bond's Holy Magick. He returned to Australia in 1972 and worked with the likes of Company Caine, Levi Smith's Clefs, Mighty Mouse, Chain, Carson and Healing Force.  "
