Background -
We get excited when we have the opportunity to acquire any Philips "Hi-Fi Stereo" LPs. The early Philips "Hi-Fi STEREO" LPs are only recently being recognized for the high quality recordings that they are. This has led to increased world wide demand with a very limited supply, thus increasing the prices on some of these records to extraordinary levels. We consider the early Dutch made Philips records to be outstanding bargains with superb sound....get them while you still can!Maurice Gendron (26 December 1920, near Nice – 20 August 1990, Grez-sur-Loing) was a French cellist, conductor and teacher. He is widely considered one of the greatest cellists of the twentieth century. He was an Officer of the Legion of Honor and a recipient of the National Order of Merit. He was an active member of the French Resistance during World War II.
He recorded most of the standard concerto repertoire with conductors such as Bernard Haitink, Raymond Leppard, and Pablo Casals (he was the only cellist to appear on a commercial recording under the baton of Casals), and with orchestras such as the Vienna State Opera Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. He also recorded the sonata repertoire with pianists such as Philippe Entremont and Jean Françaix. For 25 years, he was a member of a celebrated piano trio with Yehudi and Hephzibah Menuhin. He also made a famous recording (earned an Edison Award), of J. S. Bach's solo cello suites.
Gendron played with many musical stars of his time, including Benjamin Britten, Dinu Lipatti and Rudolf Serkin. The 18th-century Stradivarius that he played, which has become known as the ex-Gendron cello, was subsequently on loan to German cellist Maria Kliegel.
Gendron taught at the Yehudi Menuhin School and at the Paris Conservatoire. His students include Colin Carr, Chu Yibing and Jacqueline du Pré, among many others. In 2013, allegations emerged, from one pupil, claiming that Gendron was abusive towards young students during his time as a teacher at the Yehudi Menuhin School in the 60s and 70s. Dr. Richard Hillier, the headmaster at YMS, has declared that he is aware of this person's allegations but that according to school documents, no concerns were raised about Gendron's behaviour. Other students of Gendron have simply described him as a very strict, even problematic teacher, but, ultimately, an influential one.
He was the first modern cellist to record Boccherini's Concerto in B flat in its original form (he discovered the original manuscript in the Dresden State Library), instead of the Grützmacher version. This recording has been widely acclaimed by critics and it's considered a classic. He gave the first Western performance of Prokofiev's Cello Concerto with the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Walter Susskind, and was subsequently given exclusive rights to the piece's performance for 3 years.
His approach to cello playing is summed up in his book "L'Art du Violoncelle" which was written in collaboration with Walter Grimmer and published in 1999 by Schott.
He is the father of the actor François-Éric Gendron.

CONDITION Details:
The LP jacket is in near mint minus condition. The jacket is tight and clean, with NO seam splits. It has clear laminate on the front of the jacket, not back. The corners are solid. The colors on the jacket are sharp with a little discoloration on the front and back due to aging and shelf wear. The corners and seams show some shelf wear due to the age as well (see pictures with this listing for more detail as they are of the actual item).
The LP is in near mint minus condition! There are no serious marks on the vinyl. There are some light spider marks on the LP which are caused by sliding the LP in and out of the paper inner sleeve. Most of the time, these types of marks are not audible, but it really depends on the sensitivity of your audio gear. This is not a new audiophile LP....some extraneous sound is inevitable and should be expected for a vintage LP. A record from the 1960s is rarely perfect. However the LP retains much of the original gloss and sheen! There are NO serious spindle marks on the record labels either. That said, acquiring a vintage LP like this is for the performance and rarity of the LP, not necessarily just for the sound quality.A Short Note About LP GRADING -
- Mint = Only used for sealed items.
- Near Mint = Virtually flawless in every way.
- Near Mint Minus = Item has some minor imperfections, some audible.
- Excellent = Item obviously played and enjoyed with some noise.
- Very Good Plus = Many more imperfections which are noticeable and obtrusive.
For best results, always thoroughly clean your LPs before playing them.
LPs can be audiophile quality pressings (any collector of fine MFSL, half speeds, direct to discs, Japanese/UK pressings etc., can attest to the difference a quality pressing can make to an audio system).
