Phill Musra Group -- Creator Spaces LP

Original 1974 US stereo private pressing on Intex Sound (Brooklyn NY) (catalog # Rec. No. 84 / 494-22), with plain red cover which has crude artwork pasted on the front, paper slat with the titles and credits written out by hand on the back, and Intex Records sticker on back.

Very rare free jazz / avant-garde experimental album by musicians from the World's Experience Orchestra. The terms "cosmic" and "spiritual jazz" get thrown around a lot, but both truly apply to this wonderful 1974 LP.

This copy has an abstract drawing pasted on the front -- it's blue ink, hard to tell if it's pen or some kind of primitive mimeograph/carbon copy... whatever it is it's aged a lot and the glue holding it to the cover has discolored the paper over time. adapted from Clifford Allen's NI KANTU blog: Philip Musra is not a figure who’s well-known in the jazz (or even avant-garde) community, though his work in the 1970s with his brother, multi-instrumentalist Michael Cosmic, Turkish-born drummer Huseyin Ertunc, and bassist-composer John Jamyll Jones is the stuff of curiosity and possibly legend. Part of what has made their music – available on a small scattering of privately-pressed LPs – so interesting is that it does not sound like anything else. I recently characterized the trio music (without Jones) as something like a collision between the AACM and Alan Sondheim’s Ritual 770 or another, similar wild-and-woolly artists’ collective. The group was based in Cambridge, Massachusetts outside Boston at the time and also worked with pianist Gene Ashton (now known as Cooper-Moore) and poet-vocalist Ntozake Shange, author of the Obie Award winning play For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf. Musra and Cosmic also spent time in Chicago studying with AACM musicians from 1967-1969. Until recently, not much was known about their concurrent and subsequent activities.

For me, the music of Musra, Cosmic and Ertunc was extraordinarily important and seemed so from nearly the moment I heard it. Shimmering percussion dense but hanging in midair, maniacal insistence on mini-organ chords or frantic arpeggios on a glockenspiel, and intertwining flutes and saxophones are the linguistic building blocks, and the dialect is unlike anything I had previously experienced.

CONDITION: Cover G- / Vinyl VG++   cover has a lot of wear, seams and spine all intact though worn, the front artwork is torn and creased, also discolored/soiled a lot from being crudely glued on for 35+ years -- ex-radio station copy with call letters written on front and back (call letters have been altered in photo); vinyl is extremely clean, just light wear and a little light scuffing, no scratches.
