This early pressing plays with wonderful audio overall and as per the etching on S2 it was cut by Harry T Moss who is well known as being one of the best mastering engineers.  The gatefold is also beautifully clean.

Visual grading

A visually stunning vinyl this has only been lightly played as there is very little spindle wear.  It retains a lovely glossy sheen and there are only a small number of very faint sleeve removal hairlines and no scratches.  There is one slightly more obvious hairline on S1 but has no bearing on the wonderful audio quality.

Play grading  

There is a little crackle on the intro for about 30 seconds and one pop but thereafter the audio plays very clearly indeed.  There are about 4/5 other light clicks only and some light intermittent static but for an instrumental piece with so many quiet sections the audio is of an excellent standard and there are many sections I would classify as Near Mint the clarity is that good.  The depth of sound is hugely impressive and the end section in particular is stunning.  There is no distortion and apart from the first few seconds there is no other intrusive crackle.  Overall I would give it an Ex grading due to the aforementioned 'background'.

'If' on S2 plays with stunning quality from beginning to end and certainly deserves a Near Mint grading.  The clarity and warmth of the sound is incredible for a record of this age.  There is an absolute minimal amount of mega light static here and there but it is so much in the background as to be totally negligible, hardly worth mentioning really!  'Summer 68' is quite simply superb and plays as good as it would've done when first released in 1970.  Rarely have I heard this track playing so cleanly and with such definition.  The louder brass sections play perfectly and with  no distortion and it practically qualifies as Mint the audio is that good.  The very quiet 'bells' intro on 'Fat Old Sun' has great clarity and there is no obvious interference.  Thereafter it has a minor amount of background static but again it is not intrusive.  The end guitar section plays with stunning clear audio and only one faint click towards the end and minimal static on the fade out.  However, you can clearly hear the 'bells', something that is so often lost on vinyls with more interference.  'Alan's Psychedilic Breakfast' plays with exceptionally clear sound with only a few light dust ticks here and there.  Totally non-intrusive and a stunning version overall.  The many quiet passages play with a precision that is rarely heard on the early pressings and the vast majority of this track is Mint the clarity is that good.  A superb end to a classic album.

Gatefold

This is a wonderful example of this G&L gatefold and there is no obvious sign of shelf wear it is that clean.  The edges and spine are untouched and the front and back covers have no marking or writing at all and even the corners have next to no rubbing.  The opening edge has no handling wear at all and the inside is also in immaculate condition.  This is without doubt one of the best early gatefolds I have ever seen.

Inner sleeve

The plain white die-cut inner sleeve has no splits, just some creasing and ringwear.  It has the patent number and 'Made in Great Britain' on one side.

The labels

The yellow/green Harvest label have no marking or writing and are very clean indeed.  The S1 label just has a little piece missing from around the spindle hole.
