This is another from my personal collection! Over the past 35 years I have accumilated just over 49000 UK albums alone! One of a few of the rarest Pink Floyd albums that I will be listing in the near future (time permiting) I must stress that the audio quality on this album is superbe in my personal opinion! I have carefully tried to accurately describe the audio quality as honestly as possible, in my opinion a very very enjoyable and playable copy indeed. I have a few copies of this original and this is one of the top and very desirable copies!! This has been stored in a case with the vinyl seperated from the sleeve and cover for preservation for at least 25 years! This is how I have always stored my records!! I have graded the audio (in more detail below) overall as at least excellent on my systems! Pleas note, I follow no other code of grading other than my personal opinion. The audio quality has always been my upermost priority when collecting records and i have always tried to seek out the earliest stampers available to me when purchasing vinyls over the years, quickly realising that the best audio comes from the earliest, noticing that late stampers provide a more bland sound compared to early stampers! My opinion is my personal opinion and I am pleased to say that most that have purchased from me agree with me, I always appreciate that very one has different opinions and different systems that is the facination and the beauty of music!! !
The Dark Side of the Moon (titled Dark Side of the Moon in the 1993 CD edition) is a concept album by the English progressive rock band Pink Floyd!!. It was released on 17 March 1973 in the U.S. and 24 March 1973 in the UK!!
The Dark Side of the Moon builds upon previous experimentation that Pink Floyd had explored in their live shows and recordings, but without the extended instrumental excursions that, according to critic David Fricke, had become characteristic of the band after founding member Syd Barrett left in 1968!.
Guitarist David Gilmour, Barrett's replacement, would later refer to these instrumentals as "that psychedelic noodling stuff." Gilmour and Roger Waters, the band's bassist (and principal lyricist on Dark Side), cite 1971's Meddle as a turning point toward what would be realized on The Dark Side of the Moon. The album's themes include conflict, greed, ageing and mental illness (or "insanity"); the latter inspired in part by the deteriorating mental state of Barrett, who had been the band's principal composer and lyricist. The album is notable for its use of musique concrète and conceptual, philosophical lyrics, as found in much of Pink Floyd's other work!!!.
The band's most successful release, The Dark Side of the Moon is often considered to be the group's defining work, and is still frequently ranked by music critics as one of the greatest and most influential albums of all time!!!
The Dark Side of the Moon explores the nature of the human experience and according to Waters, "empathy". For example: "Speak to Me / Breathe" is about birth and being a child with new earthly experiences; "Time" deals with growing older and the overwhelmingly fast approach of death - youth being gone before one even realizes it; "The Great Gig in the Sky" explores thoughts of religion and death; "Money" mocks greed and consumerism, with tongue-in-cheek lyrics and wealth-related sound effects; "Us and Them" addresses ethnocentrism, conflict and the belief that a person's self is "always in the right"; "Brain Damage" looks at mental illness and whether "insanity" is only relative, and growing too old to be who one once was; and "Eclipse" ends the album with a grand statement about free will and causality!!.
Waters is credited as author of all the lyrics on the album, and he created the early demo tracks in a small garden shed-turned-recording studio at his home. It was also there that he recorded the effects loop for "Money", by recording the sounds of various money-related objects, including coins tossed into a mixing bowl from his wife's pottery studio!.
All four members of Pink Floyd - bassist and principal lyricist Roger Waters, guitarist David Gilmour, drummer Nick Mason and keyboardist Richard Wright - participated in the writing and production of the album, which is a rarity among later Pink Floyd albums. However, it is the first of five consecutive Pink Floyd albums with lyrics credited only to Waters!!!.
Although The Dark Side of the Moon was the planned title of the album, upon the discovery that the band Medicine Head was to release an album of the same name in 1972, the year prior to The Dark Side of the Moon's release, the band changed the album's title to Eclipse: A Piece for Assorted Lunatics. However, the Medicine Head album flopped, so Pink Floyd reverted to the original title!!!
Recorded by the band and staff engineer Alan Parsons at Abbey Road Studios between June 1972 and January 1973, the album sessions made use of the most advanced techniques available for recording instruments and sound effects in rock music at that time. Along with some Moody Blues albums, it is known for being one of the very first surround sound mixes, taking advantages of the early technology of quadraphonic systems of the time!!
The album was originally released in a gatefold LP sleeve designed by Hipgnosis and George Hardie, of Nicholas Thirkell Associates, and bore Hardie's iconic refracting prism on the cover. Inside were two posters, one bearing pictures of the band in concert with the words PINK FLOYD broken up and scattered about, and the other being a slightly psychedelic image of the Great Pyramids of Giza taken on infrared film. Also included was a sheet of stickers of the pyramids. The album was also the first Pink Floyd album to have picture labels on the record where it depicted a blue prism with black background and the credits written either in grey lettering (European issues) or white lettering!!!
The Dark Side of the Moon is the third best selling album of all time worldwide, and the original UK 1st pressings of this album are so very hard to find with good audio!!

The Vinyl
On initial inspection the vinyls playing surface looks awesome\superbe in fact It is hard see a blemish at all! This lays perfectly flat on the turntable, retaining its super glossy appearance from new! I must emphisise that It is hard to see any needle sratches, or indeed any audio sounding marks ! An absolutely stunning copy! Any marks that could possibly be seen under a strong light would be very very light whyspy sleeve removal type\whyspy and light scuff type only !
The Audio
I have played this through a few times at very loud volume on a top system at very very loud volume! ! This plays through on my systems cristal clear and very vibrant throughout, with just very minimal interfearance in my opinion, without distortion or that this has been overplayed at all, and (no) skips or jumps! Please note! At the intro on side 1. There was very light static crackle only and there were four or five static clicks on this 1st track that I heard and perhapes the odd isolated light static tick here and there in the odd quiet place. I feel that a fair grading for side 1 is at least excellent for the audio quality in my honest opinion! It is important to note that for the most part this plays through absolutely awesome throughout! I have tried to see a mark that causes this but it must be so small that my eyes can not see anything and was probably caused by a needle been droped at this point only. Absolutely stunning audio seperation that can not be surpassed on later press or any other format in my opinion! Side 2. Plays through absolutely superbely also cristal clear and vibrant throughout and without any loud clicks or pops and no distortion at all, very near perfect on my systems throughout!
Please look at my completed listings of reords that I have sold of this calaber and you will see that I normally get it right!
Please note! that because of the very quiet places renound for Pink Floyd albums only good quality vinyls are acceptable to produce the quality. This vinyl is truly exceptional indeed! The best audio seperation that I have heard for a long time on this pressing cristal clear and very vibrant on all frequencies!!!
Audio grading
Side 1.
In my opinion I would grade this at least excellent! This plays through clear and vibrant with minimal interfearence,, in the form of the odd and very few clicks at the intro, and light static isolated tick here and there and minor static crackle only, heard in quiet places !
Side 2.
In my opinion I would grade this at least excellent to excellent plus! Any static crackle or light static ticks are minimal and I heard no loud clicks or pops on this side!
Please note! I always add this disclaimer! I have given my honest opinion as usual on the audio quality as i hear it! Please allow for the odd static click\tick (as described in more detail above), in some quiet places definately!, (not consistant through out the audio) Please remember that this is a genuine 35 year old 1st pressing that would have originally been played on a 35 year old system!! My honest opinion is that in general this audio will be very hard to surpass in any other format available!
The Labels
These are the original and earliest! Only issued for a very short period of time with the solid light blue triangular prism! (later changed the colour format so that the text could be more visable)Very minimal Spidering can be seen angled to the light but there is little if (no) spindle ware the hole is perfetly round! All text is visable! (see photos) ''The Gramophone o Ltd...'' Text is featured around the rim (only earliest press) It is quite obvious to me that this vinyl has been played but due to the superbe audio quality that this has certainly not been overplayed in my opinion! at least has had very minimal play indeed for a 36 year old vinyl, in fact this has certainly never been played for at least 25 years, This has been stored in a case with the vinyl seperated from the original record sleeve and cover the way that I have always stored my records. !
The Record Sleeve
This is the original Black poly lined sleeve with no splits or tares light creasing with age features the patent number! This is the original on issued on the earliest pressings!!!
The Cover
This is the original Garrod & Lofthouse unlaminated gatefold cover in absolutely superbe condition throughout! Please note! that due to the nature of the colour being primarily black these are very hard to find in good condition! Very near perfect spine,, nice and square (often seen flattened with age) The front and also the rear is truly superbe ! any rubbing that can be seen at the edges are very (very) minimal indeed! There are no splits or tares! Please note this vinyl is now stored seperately from the sleeve and cover! Important note! This is the original 1st issue cover!,, noted that the gatefold only has one opening edge at the rear and the front opening edge is folded and sealed (only 1st issues) later issues do not have folded fron opening edge! Also when looked at in the light this has a very slight blue tinge and compared to later issues are black in colour!. Overall a superpe 1st press original 35 year old cover must be at least excellent to excellent plus!!!!
The posters and stickers
To fully complete this album BOTH of the posters and the two stickers are present and are in superbe condition with very minor creases with age on the top edge of one sticker (see photos)
