Label/Format: Harvest – matt surfaces with a gentle hint of texturing. This has the ‘The Gramophone Co Ltd’ text on the rims, so a quite early copy. Subsequent issues changed this to EMI Records text.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with any of the few spindle marks light and quite faint.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 136 grams. A very good weight for this one.

Rarity : UK copies are not hard to find per se, this proved a popular album. But the main factor has always been condition and pressing quality. Variable would be to simplistic: a well-known factor for most collectors, especially those of a similar age to myself who remember trying to get a decent pressing back in the day. Originally issued in the middle of the great oil shortage of 1971, thus many records were pressed using recycled (label and all) or ‘mixed’ new and old vinyl. Thus sound quality suffered alarmingly with pressing noises and constant unwanted crackle. I remember clearly, the first copy I ever bought had persistent moderate surface noise throughout the entire album, this was returned to the retailer and changed. The same result, this happened twice more – all were similar. I simply gave-up, the shop told me all were going to be the same from the batch available at the time. I have heard the same story from other buyers as well. This is not here say or rumour, it is a stone-cold fact – this album is always difficult to find that will offer clean sound throughout, the type more discerning and audiophile listeners want. So it is always with caution and trepidation I play-grade any copy of this album no matter what pressing or how it looks. This one failed to disappoint, and these days my analogue equipment is massively more revealing than back in the early 1970s when I was a prog-rock loving teenager. I have often found the slightly later copies to be better pressed than originals, and this being a case-in-point. This is not a very first pressing with slightly later matrixes, but still early with the Gramophone text on the label rims. It plays with little unwanted, the odd trace here-and-there being critical, this little and carefully played copy offers very fine and enjoyable sound, and also has a clean, little worn cover. A copy setting a high standard that many will enjoy.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Most interested Floyd, Harvest and prog collectors will know all about this classic album, suffice to say, it’s a delicately beautiful record in all departments. Very quiet intros to both sides, equally quiet passages in the sublime ‘Echoes’, this record takes no prisoners in hiding blemishes and defects, so a cleaner pressed album is one to treasure. As stated above, these are something of a lottery, and the majority will disappoint, thus a full-play becomes even more essential. This has very fine clean sound and detail with little unwanted. That alongside an attractive clean cover, this a very fine example. I discard far more of these than I ever offer, and this one easily makes the grade.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format and textured on the front and back surfaces, the inside is smooth. The card is thin and soft, thus highly prone to all forms of wear. Printed and made in by Garrod & Lofthouse, includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Apart from a sliver of natural light fading on the spine edge, there is little else to fault. Clean, fresh and attractive with minimal creasing and barely any rubbing or marks.

Cover Back: Almost the same again, the lack of ring wear is a major plus.

Cover Inner Gatefold: This has the smooth finished surfaces, little to fault again. A faint hint of darkening being critical near the centre.

Top Edges: Quite thin, but still straight, flat and flush.

Bottom Edges: Similar again, minor thickening or burr traces mainly near the left corner area. Storage edges on this one seldom fare much better.

Right Edge(s), and Type: All are very sharp and clean with little to fault. Record enters on the back, all are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression, a slight to left only. Folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. The text fully present, centred a little high in manufacture. A little patchy light rubbing here-and-there to the surface, a moderate scuff/rub near the bottom corner as seen.

Corners: Light tip rubbing with very fine to excellent shape largely retained. No bashes and minimal hint of any dinks – their fragility cannot be overstated.

Cover Summary: A very fine example of one of classic and prog-rock’s most uncompromising covers. With so many seen grubby, torn, threadbare and tatty, this one on the other side of the cover spectrum, one to hold and enjoy. This one will please many collectors, but a little shy for perfectionists who want ‘as-new’ at any cost.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): also in pleasing condition with only the usual ageing in the form of moderately light paper darkening. It has minimal creasing and no edge splits or repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: and this being critical for a record appearing little used. Generally clean with mostly fine shine – a small dull seen under light on side two that does nothing, also a very fine, non-feelable surface mark on side one also has no audio affect either. Any finer surface traces very gentle and faint as seen under bright angled light, there are no penetrating stylus scratches. This still quite early ‘Gramophone’ text rim record could prove difficult to find a great deal better and should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, the odd trace or sporadic tick being near impossible to avoid on this record that has considerable quieter passages. Overall a very clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available ones will outperform this significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It could prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended unless total perfection is mandatory – and good luck with that.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
