Description

This is a 1967 1st UK MONO vinyl pressing of Pink Floyd's debut LP. 

It is on the black & blue Columbia label: SX 6157 and shows the very first known matrix numbers: XAX 3419 -2 / XAX 3420 -1. 

The record is housed in a front laminated, tri-flipback 'Ernest J. Day' printed mono cover with no 'File under Popular - Pop Groups' on the back.

Labels: EXCELLENT +

A really clean and unworn pair with just a small number of barely visible spindle trails mostly around the centre holes.

 

Record sound:

Side 1: EX+ to M- deep clean full sound.

Side 2: EX+ to M- for the most part, except for a few very light inaudible scratches (one scratch runs from the end of track 1 through to the beginning of track 3 – see photo - and is just audible).

Most copies of this pressing were overplayed and are hard to find in an unworn state. However, this great sounding copy has clearly received just a small amount of play on good quality equipment and happily the sound quality throughout is free from any traces of distortion.

 

Record visual:

Side 1: EX+ to M- (light surface hairline at end of side, see photo)

Side 2: If it weren’t for the mild scratches it would be EX+, but I will VERY conservatively grade it at VG/VG+ because of the places where you can hear it.

Otherwise both playing surfaces are extremely clean and retain their gloss shine, with no 'groove-whitening' caused by overplay on poor equipment. Both sides of the record lie 100% flat on the turntable when playing. It does not skip or stick.

 

Cover: EX+

A superb example which retains a clean-gloss front laminate, but no heavy creasing or any other significant signs of wear other than a little 'show through' where the record has been housed.

All corners are free from any bumps or bruising. The rear panel is very clean and free from any blemishes or wear.

All flipbacks are undamaged and fully intact.

The spine is clean and white with full lamination and wording.

 

Inner sleeve: EX

Housed in the very first EMI advertising sleeve for this release, which shows The Beatles’ Revolver, The Yardbirds’ ‘Roger the Engineer’, etc. Later copies - even of this first pressing - had a different sleeve showing The Beatles’ Sgt Pepper.

Clean with a few light storage wrinkles - no tears, writing or missing paper.

 

This is a really fantastic record, and it is a pity about the marks on Side 2. Nevertheless in my decades of collecting, I've never seen or heard a first pressing of this album anywhere near as good as this.
