I love this early Psychedelia, maybe partly for my history love of seeing the whole missing link aspect. Missing what now? Well it's no secret that the psychedelia bands that first arrived on the scene mostly had background in the Beat Music stuff that defined the British Invasion. Some didn't of course, I'd never really claim that Jimi Hendrix was of that ilk. But others like Cream definitely were, and so too are Pink Floyd. Yeah they never made any of the stuff themselves but that's how you can tell it's early psych, because it still has lots of that old Beat Music hidden in it's genetics. It's severely warped of course! But it's there, they sound kind of like if someone was drowning the early Kinks in a vat of LSD or something. And I love that sound, I love the mutation of simplicity! This was where it first happened for rock (don't kid yourself into thinking it didn't happened in other genres like Jazz or even Classical). It happened again when rock re-simplified itself with Punk in 77, before long the bands mostly started playing weird artsy stuff, you know Post-Punk right? So that's what Pink Floyd really best represents at the point of their debut. A band close enough in sound to be clearly seen to have originated their sound in the simple goofy pop rock of a few years past. But one who never dealt in it, and so is in essence purely about Psychedelia. Not too deep or far into the thing, but full well into it. Just on the other side of the looking glass. They're very good at it too! Before I heard them out I was convinced that people only pretended to like this album since it was made by the same band that later became famous for their Prog. Revisionist history if you will, or simply rabid fandom trying to justify every inch of a discography. And actually in my experience? This is probably my favorite incarnation of the band, this album and the next. Much as I can respect some of their 70's work too often it seems distant and lifeless, this in contrast is pretty damn full of life and is even fun! Syd Barret was still in the band, the leader in fact! This is his show rather than any of the Gilmour/Waters stuff of later. And his agenda doesn't seem to be experimenting to experiment so much as making a strange trip of dreamy moodscapes and childhood whimsy. That's right, what goes undermentioned about this is the strange little kids songs that dot parts of it. Scarecrow and Bike right at the end for instance. Some lazy idiots might try to justify this as part of a drug thing but goddamn it that's stupid. Yeah, of course drugs were involved in the making of it all (part of what sped up Syd's mental collapse) but to me this is apart from that, I don't hear drugs I hear the sorts of things I see when I sleep. I think Syd probably had full sober intentions to make this album harken back to a sense of childhood freedom (I mean it is named after a Wind in the Willows chapter), and that sense of childness is what drives the whole thing and is it's main appeal. Acting like every music of this sort is just DRUG TRIPS LOL is dumb shallow garbage for people too stupid to be writing in the first place. What ultimately sells this though is that it's actually rather tuneful! And yes I include Interstellar Overdrive in that statement. I've heard tuneless experimental jams aplenty in my time, and that ones full of tunes. Maybe the less experienced won't be able to pick them out of the crazy playing and so forth but they're in there. This is an awesome debut, I kinda wish this was what the band stuck to to be honest.
