PINK FLOYD – A Saucerful Of Secrets ORIG Columbia LP / SX 6258 (UK, Mono, 1968)

Happy to present Floyd’s classic 2nd long player in rarer mono, the only non-comp album to feature all 5 members in some form, if not always together (literally).  Of course features the classic live favourite ‘Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun’ which I believe is the only Floyd song to feature all 5 members on the same recording.  Read on because this is a very satisfactory keeper copy.

The front laminated tri-flipback sleeve printed by Garrod &Lofthouse Ltd. is the correct 1st press jacket featuring the ‘File Under Pop’ and the ‘6807 TPS’ date code on the rear bottom.  This is a well above average copy of this classic psychedelic design.  It has the following features away from a true mint grade: only 2 creases to the front, 1 thumb-type to the edge and another one nearer the middle; slight laminate shrinkage from all edges – typical to any laminated sleeve of this vintage; some softening of the opening edges (no real ‘feathering); a few small laminate creases on the flaps; some soft and near invisible handling creases to the rear opening edge side and some tiny areas of paper loss along the vertical rear flap.  That’s it – small insignificant flaws, REMEMBER I OUTLINE ALL ASPECTS AWAY FROM A TRUE MINT GRADE.  There are no tears, splits, established deep creasing, hardly any corner softening, no writing, no dirt or residue, no discernible ring impression and no rippling or bends.  Many would say EX+ minimum but I’ll go a strong and true EX (Excellent) hoping to surprise and delight.  A lovely looking sleeve really.

The original 1960s blue and black Columbia labels bear the ‘Sold In The UK’ text and are a very nice pair with light to moderate spindle trails, more on one side than the other (in my book, that means I consider this record to have been played less than 10 times).  The spindle trails are tight to the centre hole and do not extend out on to the label too far.  There is no writing, stickers or tears but slight handling signs on the paper if you angle the labels into a certain light.  Overall, well above average labels, too.

The sharp medium weight vinyl is in all round EX- (Excellent Minus) condition.  It’s generally clean throughout and maintains close to full shine.  Side 1 is virtually unmarked were it not for very small, very fine, hard to see ‘withdrawal’ marks and tiny scuff lines.  Side 2 has 1 prominent surface scuff and two longish concentric hairlines, not instantly recognizable.  The playing surfaces have been examined in detail so there’s nothing hidden.  Visually, Side 1 looks a minimum EX, if not +, while Side 2 looks VG+ but because of isolated markings only which do not impact on the audio.  THE RECORD HAS BEEN CAREFULLY LISTENED TO and plays very well with the following noted: occasional light ticks (no more than 5 a side, and none repetitive), slight surface static here and there – only noticeable on a bit of STCFTHOTS and the intro to the title track.  No loud pops, incessant crackle, hiss, repetitive clicks or loss of clarity were noted.  Plays close to full excellent, certainly better than VG.

A well above average mono of this classic UK original featuring Syd’s last official contributions to the band.  No reserve.
