Label Conditions: Both in stunning condition: ultra clean, fresh and highly attractive with only a couple of light and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Cat Number: MGM-CS-8120.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 138 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: This is an original first pressing and it’s rare, make no mistake. The price guide valuation on this album as an original are insanely low, this record sold in very small numbers and only later did it get noticed as it includes three Pink Floyd songs unavailable elsewhere. By then, the record has been repressed and the cover changed. Only the originals have laminated fronts and three rear flipbacks, as this one does (please see close-up of the back to show corner flipback detail). Repressings had a standard matt cover and were flat-backed, these are far easier to find, the originals being rare and elusive and now highly sort-after by Floyd and Grateful Dead fans. The reissues are thinner-pressed and rarely will have the superb sound of the first-issued. Not only is this one of the rarest albums to include Pink Floyd, it’s never easy to find in top conditions. This copy is little short of immaculate, the record could easily pass for new and has pristine perfect sound from beginning to end. The cover is gorgeous and has aged little. A beautiful piece for the 70s decade and for Pink Floyd fans in particular, this is a priceless piece.

Brief Info: ‘Zabriskie Point’ is a 1970 film by Michelangelo Antonioni, it was not received well by the reviewers of the day and it sunk without trace. Time has been kinder now, and reappraised more favourably. I am not a film reviewer and have not even seen this one before. The music included on the album is superb, and on that I am far more interested. It includes three important songs by the early Pink Floyd. The final song ‘Come in Number 51, Your Time is Up’, is an alternative take on ‘Carefuly With That Axe Eugene’ with even more manic screams – this is ‘Ummagumma’ era Floyd at their most experimental. Other material is varied with some great songs by Garcia and his Grateful Dead, also featured are the US version of Kaleidoscope amongst some interesting others. A fantastic rare original album that was as popular as the movie at the time of release, few sold or are seen with the laminated, flipbacked cover. This is one time has over-looked, as did I guess the original owner. The record could pass for new and the cover is little short. The sound pristine immaculate from beginning to end, so-much-so, this is now my listen-too anywhere copy with the addition of ‘Embryo’ from the Harvest ‘Picnic’ album, another ‘lost’ Floyd track from the same period. This is truly a copy for the Floyd connoisseur and I can hardly imagine finding this vintage record better. Perfection can only be matched, never beaten and this record is simply that.

Cover Grade and Format: Mint(-), a single format with the original laminated front. This protection wraps around the closed edges on to three rear external flipbacks. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse.

Lamination & Front: The front looks fantastic with very shiny, fresh and ultra clear laminate. It has no friction rubs or dulling and all is fully adhered with no lifting or blisters. Any marks or creases are ultra fine and light and any of the tiny few present only show under angled light. A mild record rim pressmark near the top but again it has little visibility. The right edge sees the laminate end slightly short of full width, the white exposed strip is white and ungrubbied. I also feel this important to mention as it helps prove the elimination of cover edge trimming, most laminated covers sees laminate end short on this crucial edge. The actual cover artwork looks incredible with deep rich colour and no damage, an absolute gem for the discerning cover collector too.

Cover Back: The back is also in wonderful condition and lacking the usual grubbiness seen on many like this. Any discolouration is tiny with just the faintest toning trace no the left edge (and this being somewhat critical). No creasing or ringwear and the unprotected main panel is unrubbed and retains an attractive shade of white, not far off what it would have been like nearly 40 years ago. The flipbacks are undamaged and all firmly adhered with no lifts or repairs. Barely any traces of end burring, the ends are very clean too with no grime-line formation. A tiny few surface hairline creases only but these critical flipbacks are unyellowed and look supremely neat, as does the cover in general.

Top Edge: Unworn.

Bottom Edge: Unworn, both straight too.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Generally clean, sharp with barely any wear and no feathering, guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Superb, practically as made: Solid, straight, uncompressed and square, the ends tapered in manufacture and these retain great shape too. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate (please see spine close-up).

Corners: All four retain excellent shape and definition with barely any traces of noteworthy wear.

Cover Summary: A beautiful all round example of this rare original format early 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please most-all collectors.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-), so what is the minus? Well one near microscopic surface mark that has no sound whatsoever and look hard to even see it. This record is truly stunning, jaw-drop gorgeous and looks pressed yesterday. Only the labels, matrixes and cover details will tell you it’s nearly 40-years-old. A supreme visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy barely even played on all the evidence, reitterated by immaculate, reference-quality audiophile sound. Visually a sublime record that should please all collectors.

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This breathtaking record plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault whatsoever. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. No surface sounds, pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing and not all MGM records are believe me. This ticks all the positive boxes and will prove near impossible to find better for looks or sound. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly, barely even run-in in vinyl terms, and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove immensely difficult to match let alone find better and can be unreservedly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
