Description
This is a UK mono first pressing of Pink Floyd's debut LP "Piper at the gates of dawn" on the black & blue Columbia label.This my second attempt at listing this in case you think you've seen it before! I had to pull it last week due to the pictures not loading properly, apologies to those bidding and watching before, hopefully no probs this time! The laminated sleeve is in Very Good condition, there is no "file under pop" credit to the top right hand side of the rear of the sleeve making this the very rare first pressing. There are some light creases to the front and some corner bruising, the back is a little grubby in places but the flipbacks are intact and the spine is fully intact and readable.
What makes this copy to be of particular interest is that I believe this copy was once the property of Sir Peter Blake the famous UK pop artist. Sir Peter was of course at Abbey Road working on the Sgt Pepper cover at the same time that Floyd were there recording this. Have a look at the name written on the top left hand corner of the back cover and compare it with an example of Sir Peter's signature easily found on ebay or the net and compare it. I have no proof that this was his, I bought it in Camden Market 20 years ago but having compared the two I personally have no doubt that it was. There is some light spindle wear to the labels and some spider trails, they both carry the "Sold in the Uk.." and "GRAMOPHONE CO.." credits. The vinyl is in very nice Excellent condition, very glossy with just the lightest of hairlines on each side. It plays beautifully, near silent run-ins and totally unspoilt music. If I'm being ultra critical, there is occaisonally the lightest of background crackle during the quietest bits of "Interstellar Overdrive" but otherwise the playback is flawless. No obtrusive crackle, pops, clicks or distortion and of course no sticks or jumps, a real pleasure to listen to. Matrix info, Side 1 is XAX 3419-2,stampers GD at 3 o'clock, 1 at 9 o'clock. Side 2, XAX 3420-1, stampers GA at 2 o'clock, 1 at 9, a very early pressing of this seminal LP.
Overall a very nice copy of this are record, particularly notable for the very first press cover, the very nice vinyl and what I believe to be it's very interesting original ownership.
I have been a record collector for many years and am now selling most of my vinyl to fund a change of career. I use strict Record Collector standard grading and everything I sell is cleaned first on my Clearaudio Smart Matrix cleaning machine and then carefully played on a Rega Planer 3 deck with Goldring cartridge.
