PINK SECTION
San Francisco's new wave music scene of the late '70s was a hotbed of bands that took
an arty and outré approach to pop music, and few bands exemplified this better than Pink Section.
Their name was an in-joke for fellow Bay Area residents (the "Pink Section" was local
slang for the weekly entertainment guide in The San Francisco Chronicle, published
on pink newsprint), and their music was by turns harsh, witty, adventurous,
and purposefully dissonant. Formed by students at the San Francisco Art Institute,
Pink Section had a brief but fruitful run after making their debut in 1979, with two members
going on to form another group of San Francisco cult heroes, the Inflatable Boy Clams
