Bob King Crawford father of Planet Records
Robert "King" Crawford was in his teens when he borrowed 90 from his Aunt Ethel, a needlework designer in the Block Arcade, and founded "the first major all-Australian record company".
This weekend the writer, artist and one-time jazz crooner quietly celebrates the 50th year of his Planet Record Corporation, which operated into the 1960s and now survives through material reissued on CD.
"I'd worked at a second-hand records place in the old Eastern Market Buildings," says Mr Crawford. "I'd got a big knowledge of what people wanted." Back in the early 1950s he was lead crooner with Alan Rhodes and the Jump Men. "We decided to make some records to promote the band," which, Mr Crawford says, "sold like crazy". With the loan from Aunt Ethel, Planet recorded an album titled Hillbilly Classics in the hallway of technician friend Marcus Herman's parents' home.
By Larry Schwartz September 14, 2003 -
Planet boasted many best selling albums. Some of the artists were Bruce Clarke, Barry O'Dowd, Patti Stewart, Malcolm Arthur, Vic West, Kenny Arnott, Jack O'Leary, Rochelle Turner, The Trailblazers, Allan Rhodes, Billy Hyde, Bill McCormack.
Planet produced the first Melbourne Rock & Roll LP featuring The Henri Bource Allstars. A regular visitor to Planet was a skinny teenage lad, Keith McGowan, who used to pick up records for broadcast by his employer, Radio 3UZ in Bourke Street.

Bruce Clarke *
From 1949-1956 Bruce Clarke worked as a freelance guitarist-arranger among the many live radio orchestras. He accompanied overseas artists on their Australian concert tours and played in the dance halls and ballrooms that were the mainstay of pre-television social life.
In 1956, television arrived in Australia and brought this era to a close. Bruce moved into film and television music production and composition. He established his own studios and production company The Jingle Workshop in 1957. He wrote and directed over 3000 television and film soundtracks for local and overseas producers between 1957 and 1974, some including vocalist Helen Reddy. As well as guitar he made extensive use of electronics, including the Moog synthesizer.
