Interesting mix of Colorful & surreal mixes with pop rock, including vocal effects, fuzz guitar and organ used to create a psychedelic experience. Tommy James was always more well known for infectious song oriented tunes that went straight up the hit charts. However, Tommy and the Shondells evolved with the times heading towards the "underground sound". Even so, the Lp still has their signature style and overall is pretty solid. Best track might just be the rather unknown, but terrific, psychedelic treasure "I Am a Tangerine"
Giving Tommy James his creative freedom resulted in the group checking into the "psychedelic sound." The title track, the edited 45rpm, was a big, timeless chart hit in 1968. Here you get the full (unedited) version with extended psych passages. However this Lp highlights a couple of cool garage-punk nuggets, like ?-Mark & The Mysterians cover "Do Something to Me" and early Hollies gem, "I'm Alive" which is loaded with shrieks. Elsewhere, "Sugar on Sunday" and the folksy "Kathleen McArthur" are pleasant surprises. Contrast them with the also timeless chart hit "Crystal Blue Persuasion" and you get surprisingly enjoyable album that still holds up 48 years later.Crimson & Clover 5:26
