Description
In a splendid series of recording sessions in 1927 and '28, THOMAS "FATS" WALLER joined his Pipe Organ and hot piano with THOMAS MORRIS AND HIS HOT BABIES, to make these singular sides, "PLEASE TAKE ME OUT OF JAIL" and "HE'S GONE AWAY."
Recorded in Camden, New Jersey in December, 1927, at the Victor "church" studio, these sides (and others) took advantage of Fats' unique ability to "stomp" a pipe organ. If you ever tried to play one, especially an old church organ, you'd quickly find there is a considerable delay between the time you strike a key on the organ manual, and when you actually hear the note. There are so many mechanical linkages between key and pipe, and so much distance from the pipes to your ear, that a fraction-of-a-second delay is inevitable. It makes keeping time almost impossible!
But this was no problem for Fats Waller. He had probably the greatest sense of time and "swing" of any jazz musician, and could keep hellaciously steady stomp tempos on the organ. So, as an experiment, Victor paired Fats' organ with a hot jazz group - THOMAS MORRIS (cornet), JIMMY ARCHEY (trombone), BOBBY LEECAN (guitar) and EDDIE KING (drums) - and the unique result is what you hear.
THIS original 1927 "Scroll" Victor 21202 is in quite serviceable V+ condition. There is some surface noise, but underneath it, as you can see, not much actual groove wear - what's there is very even - or needle damage. The labels are a bit tattered. The ball-point pen inscriptions of date and location were written by JIM COOPRIDER, ace record repairman!
