POISON THE WELL – YOU COME BEFORE YOU
2017 Backbite Records Black Vinyl Misprint – Limited to 750 Copies
An unusual and somewhat notorious pressing of Poison the Well’s landmark 2003 album You Come Before You.
This is the 2017 German Backbite Records reissue (BBR-044) pressed on black vinyl and limited to 750 copies. This edition has become particularly recognizable among Poison the Well collectors because of its prominent printing errors, most obviously the album title on the front jacket:
“YOU COME BEFOR YOU”
—with the final “E” missing from “Before.” The opening quotation mark on the cover is also printed upside down, and additional typographical errors appear in the track information. Contemporary listings specifically document the black misprint edition as a pressing of 750 copies.
THE STORY BEHIND THIS PRESSING
Shortly after its release, this edition became controversial when Poison the Well publicly disavowed the reissue, stating that the band had not been consulted or involved with it and expressing disappointment with the quality of the release.
Backbite Records maintained that the pressing was legally licensed through the rights holder, Warner Music Group, making this an unusual case: it was not an illicit bootleg, but it was a reissue produced without the band’s participation or endorsement. The combination of the band’s public objection, the conspicuous “Befor” cover error and other printing mistakes has given this particular edition a distinctive reputation within the album’s vinyl history.

CONDITION
Vinyl presents very nicely overall with some light signs of previous handling/play visible under strong direct lighting. Jacket also presents very well with minor shelf/handling wear. Original printed insert is included.

A particularly interesting edition for the Poison the Well completist—not simply another repress, but the infamous 2017 Backbite edition whose printing errors and subsequent dispute with the band made it one of the stranger chapters in the history of You Come Before You on vinyl.
