POLITICAL RECORDS (78 rpm) (2)
These two pictorial records were produced in 1948 to attempt to influence voters to vote for comparatively liberal candidate Henry Wallace, who was running as a third party nominee against Democrat Harry Truman and Republican Thomas Dewey.
One record, labeled “GREAT DAY” shows pictures of Wallace. The opposite side has, written around the rim:
“The donkey is tired and thin,
The elephant thinks he’ll move in,
They all yell and fuss,
But they ain’t foolin’ us,
‘Cause they’re brothers right under the skin.
It’s the same, same merry-go-round,
Which one will you ride this year?”
The other record, labeled, “There’s magic in that ballot!~” has Mike Loring singing “I’ve Got a Ballot!”, and the opposite side has famous singer PAUL ROBESON singing “ THE BATTLE HYMN OF ’48.”
These records are reminders that there was a time when a third party had a significant bearing on an election.
