Extremely RARE in excellent condition, great group. You can tell they’re having fun.

Pony Poindexter, New Orleans-born alto and soprano sax man, returns to the music of his birthplace with Booker Ervin, the Hard Bop tenor sax, and Al Grey, a wonderful trombone talent. Poindexter left the Big Easy when he was 14, but not before he had his first professional gig.

With Pony, Booker Ervin and Al Grey on the front line, the rhythm section includes Gildo Mahones, piano; George Tucker, bass; and Jimmy Smith, drums.

This monophonic recording was released on Prestige 16001 in 1963. The label is yellow with black printing. Rudy Van Gelder did the (Van Gelder stamped in the deadwax area.)

The songs, all with a New Orleans theme: Side A 1. Front O’ Town. 2. Happy Strut. 3. Creole Girl. 4. 4-11-44. Side B 1. Back O’ Town. 2. Muddy Dust. 3. French Market. 4. Gumbo Filet.

I play-graded this album NM-. The mono sound is excellent with no surface noise.

Visually, under bright light, the vinyl still has a good shine, and I picked out a faint scuff or two, and a hairline scratch, but nothing to affect the sound. I graded it VG++.

The cover is excellent, with no ring wear at all, illustrated with a photo of Pony playing the soprano, but all corners show a little wear. There are no age spots on the front, but there is a slight crease near the top right corner. The back cover is in good shape, but a little shadowed by age and the top right corner has a small defect. I would grade it VG++.
