POPOL VUH Affenstunde (Liberty LBS 83460 I) Krautrock RARE German 1st Pressing EX+
RARE very first German pressing of Popol Vuh`s debut album "Affenstunde" on Liberty Records (1970).
Employing the new Moog synthesizer only recently acquired from Klaus Schulze (and pictured on the back cover in all its glory), Florian Fricke performs (on title track "Affenstunde") what must surely be one of the most beautiful, harmonically gratifying synthesizer solos ever committed to tape.
"Affenstunde is the debut recording by composer and multi-instrumentalist Florian Fricke's Popol Vuh, named for the sacred Mayan text. (...) For those completely dislocated by Tangerine Dream's early experiments in sonic terror and dynamics, Affenstunde is somehow akin yet very different. Fricke's synthesizers are more interested in pulse and circularity, not utter dislocation and shock. The music here all seems of a piece, despite the different selection titles and the single percussion piece on the set, "Dream, Pt. 5" -- primitive hand drums run through the middle of the mix. (...) The entire album would have made a fantastic soundtrack for Andrei Tarkovsky's film Solaris. The sheer momentum of the title cut, which closes the album and integrates spacious electronic soundscapes, ever deepening tonalities, found taped choral vocals whispering in the background, and percussion is one of the most provocative pieces to come from the Krautrock generation. GRADING:
EX+ COVER with very minor all-round wear. Please see photos for details.
- Original laminated gatefold sleeve in very fine condition.
- Features the original RARE first-pressing Liberty Records sticker ("Electric Rock - Idee 2000").
- A few small creases along the spine of the album.
- Light record imprint on the back cover only.
- Slight bump to the top edge (at left).
- Includes the original polylined inner sleeve in MINT- condition, date-stamped "11/69" (at bottom right).
EX+ RECORD, played a few times at most. Not an easy find in this condition!
- Near-pristine vinyl on both sides, with very passable audio reproduction throughout.
- A few of the lightest hairlines, from sleeve removal and visible under bright light only.
- Sporadic minor background crackle in quiet passages; with a few lightly audible "swishes" at the end of Side One.
- A small, barely visible scratch on Side Two (15mm long; in the middle of "Affenstunde") is inaudible.
- Original first-pressing black Liberty Records labels with a single small spindle line on Side Two. Otherwise perfect.
- The matrix stamps in the run-off grooves read "C 83460 A-2 Made in Germany" and "C 83460 B-1 Made in Germany".
- This record is certified to be an original first German pressing of "Affenstunde", released in early 1970.
