When Jane's Addiction dissolved in 1992, Perry Farrell and drummer Stephen Perkins wasted little time channeling their restless creativity into a new project: Porno for Pyros. Their self-titled debut arrived in 1993 and quickly carved its place in the alternative rock, riding the momentum of MTV and a fanbase eager for Farrell's next chapter. The record's unique centerpiece, 'Pets', became one of MTV's most celebrated tracks of the year, its dreamy, apocalyptic vision pairing perfectly with Farrell's otherworldly croon. Yet the album's real depth lies in its raw and confrontational edges. 'Cursed Female' stands out as a startlingly ahead-of-its-time anthem, addressing the struggles of being gay and trans with a fierce honesty rarely heard in mainstream rock of the early 90s. Its jagged riffs and Farrell's impassioned delivery feel as strong now as they did three decades ago. Throughout, the album bears the unmistakable shadow of Jane's Addiction with psychedelic textures, twisted funk undertones and Farrell's elastic vocal theatrics but it also has its own darker, more introspective identity. Songs feel like sketches of urban decay with moments of beauty tangled in. Now reissued in 2025, Porno for Pyros is reminder at Farrell's vision: edgy, theatrical and unafraid to confront difficult truths.
