Seventeen years after the release of Symbiotics, a split album with fellow groundbreaking duo Techno Animal, German experimental techno legends Porter Ricks reunited for a performance at the Berlin Atonal festival and subsequently released the three-track EP Shadow Boat on Tresor. Since all of the other labels that originally released Porter Ricks albums and EPs during the '90s (including Chain Reaction and Mille Plateaux) have long since gone under, it seems like revered Berlin techno institution Tresor is the only label worthy of heralding the long-awaited return of the duo. Shadow Boat sounds a bit more pumped-up and immediate than some of their older releases, but otherwise, they haven't modernized or altered their sound too much. This, of course, is a great thing, as their work remains powerful two decades on. The EP's title track immediately rushes into grainy, overflowing textures and pounding beats, ecstatically flowing around a submerged dub-inspired bassline. The other two tracks are slower and less exuberant, and emphasize rippling echo and other dub trickery. Dub techno is a crowded sea, but Porter Ricks are still among the absolute best at it, and this EP is another prime example of why, and a most welcome return. ~ Paul Simpson
