By permanent close of the perming 60s, Elvis was done with Hollywood, and preferred to sing songs carrying a maturer weight, in nice sync with his newly forming image as a titanic star. These ones, cut during the second stretch of his 1969 stay at American Sound Studio, first sounded in 1970, following the same thread as his Memphis comeback material, but digging deeper on regret, distance and unclaimed chances. 'Stranger In My Own Home Town' and 'Inherit The Wind' frame Elvis as an outsider in motion, while writers like Mickey Newbury and Bill Rice supply narratives closer to country-soul confession than rock & roll bravado.
