Una retrospettiva della vita e della fotografia di Linda McCartney
Nel 1966, mentre lavorava come receptionist per la rivista Town and Country, Linda riuscì ad accaparrarsi un pass per un evento promozionale dei Rolling Stones molto esclusivo su uno yacht sul fiume Hudson: le foto che realizzò a quell’evento, fresche e naturali, furono giudicate molto più belle di quelle del fotografo ufficiale della band e la proiettarono nel mondo dello star system. Nel 1968 il suo ritratto di Eric Clapton fu scelto come copertina della rivista Rolling Stone, prima donna a ricevere un tale onore. Negli anni successivi Linda ritrasse tutti gli artisti più importanti della scena del periodo, quali Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Simon & Garfunkel, The Who, The Doors e i Grateful Dead. Nel 1967, si recò a Londra per documentare gli Swinging Sixties, e lì conobbe Paul McCartney al Bag ’O Nails club. In seguito fotografò i Beatles durante un evento per il lancio dell’album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Paul e Linda si innamorarono e si sposarono il 12 marzo 1969. Nei tre decenni successivi, fino alla sua morte prematura, si dedicò alla famiglia, alla causa degli animali e del vegetarianesimo e alla fotografia.
Dai primi ritratti rock ’n’ roll agli ultimi anni dei Beatles, passando per un tour con i Wings e la crescita di quattro figli con Paul, Linda ha immortalato su pellicola tutto il suo mondo. I suoi scatti spaziavano da spontanei ritratti di famiglia alle sessioni in studio con Stevie Wonder e Michael Jackson, ma anche con artisti come Willem de Kooning e Gilbert and George. Sempre fresca e senza pretese, la sua opera presenta un calore e un senso del momento che catturano l’essenza di ogni soggetto. Che stesse fotografando i suoi figli, delle celebrità, gli animali o un momento fuggevole della vita quotidiana, lo faceva sempre senza presunzione né artificiosità.
Questo volume retrospettivo — una selezione realizzata a partire dal suo archivio di oltre 200.000 immagini – è realizzato in stretta collaborazione con Paul McCartney e i loro figli e rappresenta un commovente viaggio privato e un’eterna testimonianza del grande talento di Linda. Sono incluse prefazioni di Paul, Stella e Mary McCartney.

Linda McCartney (nata Eastman) nacque a New York nel 1941. Dopo un corso di fotografia con Hazel Archer e gli studi di storia dell’arte presso l’Università dell’Arizona, si trasferì a New York, dove avviò la propria carriera ritraendo le rock star. Oltre che per la sua fotografia – che è stata esposta in oltre 50 gallerie in tutto il mondo, tra cui il Victoria and Albert Museum e la National Portrait Gallery di Londra, la Bonni Benrubi Gallery e l’International Center of Photography di New York – Linda McCartney è nota come appassionata attivista per i diritti degli animali e come rigorosa vegetariana. Ha scritto libri di cucina e fondato una propria linea di alimenti vegetariani surgelati, il tutto mentre cresceva una famiglia, si dedicava alla fotografia e faceva parte, con Paul, della band dei Wings. Morì nel 1998 all’età di 56 anni.

Annie Leibovitz lavora come fotografa da 40 anni. Capo fotografo di Rolling Stone e prima collaboratrice della rediviva Vanity Fair, oltre al suo lavoro editoriale per Vogue, ha conseguito diversi premi con le sue campagne pubblicitarie. È stata designata “Leggenda vivente” dalla Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.
Martin Harrison è storico dell’arte e della fotografia, oltre che curatore di mostre. Ha lavorato con Linda McCartney a Roadworks (1996), Light from Within (2001), e alle sue mostre presso il National Museum of Photography, Film and Television di Bradford e l’International Center of Photography di New York. Ha pubblicato diffusamente di fotografia e, di recente, si è occupato delle opere di Francis Bacon.
La curatrice:
Alison Castle ha studiato filosofia alla Columbia University e cinema e fotografia alla New York University (NYU/International Center of Photography masters program). Ha curato diverse pubblicazioni di fotografia, cinema e design, tra cui Some Like it Hot, The Stanley Kubrick Archives, Linda McCartney: Life in Photographs, e Marc Newson: Works.

A retrospective of Linda McCartney's life and photography
In 1966, during a brief stint as a receptionist for Town and Country magazine, Linda Eastman snagged a press pass to a very exclusive promotional event for the Rolling Stones aboard a yacht on the Hudson River; her fresh, candid photographs of the band were far superior to the formal shots made by the band’s official photographer, and she was instantly on the way to making a name for herself as a top rock ’n’ roll photographer. In May 1968, with her portrait of Eric Clapton, she entered the record books as the first female photographer to have her work featured on the cover of Rolling Stone. During her tenure as the leading photographer of the late 1960s’ musical scene, she captured many of rock’s most important musicians on film, including Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Simon & Garfunkel, The Who, The Doors, and the Grateful Dead. In 1967, Linda went to London to document the "Swinging Sixties," where she met Paul McCartney at the Bag ’O Nails club and subsequently photographed The Beatles during a launch event for the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album. Paul and Linda fell in love, and were married on March 12, 1969. For the next three decades, until her untimely death, she devoted herself to her family, vegetarianism, animal rights, and photography.From her early rock ’n’ roll portraits, through the final years of The Beatles, via touring with Wings to raising four children with Paul, Linda captured her whole world on film. Her shots range from spontaneous family pictures to studio sessions with Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson, as well as artists Willem de Kooning and Gilbert and George. Always unassuming and fresh, her work displays a warmth and feeling for the precise moment that captures the essence of any subject. Whether photographing her children, celebrities, animals, or a fleeting moment of everyday life, she did so without pretension or artifice.
This retrospective volume—selected from her archive of over 200,000 images—is produced in close collaboration with Paul McCartney and their children. Included are forewords by Paul, Stella, and Mary McCartney. As such, it is a moving personal journal and a lasting testament to Linda’s talent.
